- THE INDEPENDENT NEWS - JUNE 22, 1995
July, The Month We Celebrate Our Independence July is a month in which we should pause to offer grateful thanks for our independence as a nation. Yes, independence which over 200 years ago our forefathers, through suffering, privation and even death, gave to us. They were willing to pay the price. Everyone was to be equal, before God and the law. "We the People” were to write our Constitution which would grant us freedom of speech, of the press and worship of God. American Independence Day has been an annual national celebration since the day America was founded in 1776 but the celebration hasn’t always been held on the Fourth of J uly. That first year Independence Day was celebrated on July 2, the day the Colonies officially separated from Great Britian. By the next year, however, the holiday had moved up to days to July 4, the day the Continental Congress accepted the Declaration of Independence. Independence Day was first celebrated only in Philadelphia, but over the next few years the celebration spread to othe cities and states, until the holiday was declared a national event and all Americans celebrated America’s birthday on the Fourth of July. All Fourths of July, since the first, have been celebrated in much the same way with parades, picnics, speeches, fireworks, bonfires and bell-ringing. The only Independence Day custom practiced by the early Americans that we don’t

observe today was putting lighted candles in house windows to show support for the new American government. Writers and speakers in different lands have expressed their feelings of Liberty or Freedom. William Cowper said — 'Fredom hath a thousand charms to show, that slaves, however, contended, never know’. The statement was made by Somerset Maugham — ’lf a nation values anything more than freedom, it will lose its freedom. And the irony of it is that, if it is comfort or security that it values more, it will lose that, too.’ Wise Benjamin Franklin spoke these words — ‘They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety’. And Daniel Webster stated — ’God grants liberty only to those who love it, and are always ready to defend it’. With these points in mind, an enjoyable day of celebration will be observed by all. At many public celebrations, just prior to the longawaited fireworks, there will be Flag Retreat by a veterans organization. Flag Etiquette states — “During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the Flag, or when the Flag is passing in a parade or in a review, all persons present shouldd face the Flag, stand at attention, and salute. Those present in uniform should render the military salute. When not in uniform, men should remove the headress with right hand, holding it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Men without hats should salute in the same manner. Aliens should stand at attention. Women should salute by placing the right hand over the heart. The salute to the
Flag in the moving column should be rendered at the moment the Flag passes. When the National Athem is played and the Flag is not displayed, all present should stand and face toward the music. Those in uniform should salute at the first note of the Anthem, retaining this position until the last note. All others should stand at attention, men removing the headdress. When the Flag is displayed, all present should face the Flag and salute.” You’re tired from the activities of the day; the children are tired and anxious for the display of fireworks. But, please, show respect to our Flag by standing and saluting the Flag of our country, not just on this day but everytime the flag is displayed. The flag is our country — what better way can we show our love for it, than by observing proper flag etiquette. Orville Easterday Unit 189 American Legion Auxiliary Walkerton FINCH-REAMER REUNION The 56th Annual Finch-Reamer Reunion was held on Sunday, June 25, at Liberty Park in North Liberty, with 40 present. The park was lovely and the weather great. Charles Hay gave the blessing and we then enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner. Our thanks to all of the ladies. The meeting was called to order by our president Frank Rokosz. We voted to keep the same officers as they have been doing an excellent job. They are: president, Frank Rokosz, Whiting, Indiana; vice president, Robert T. Clarke, Shererville, Indiana; and secretarytreasurer, Debby Rokosz, Whiting, Indiana. Gifts were given to: eldest, Carolyn Rogers, 85; youngest, Barbara Gark, 6 months; come the farthest, Carolyn B. Schreeve, Maryland. The meeting was closed by Charlotte McQuown, and then the fun began. Debby Rokosz had lots of games and prizes for both young and old, which were enjoyed by all. Everyone had a good time at the reunion, and it was agreed to meet next year on the last Sunday in June at Liberty Park in North Liberty. Some of the families went to the home of Marjorie and Emmett Garke, where the children had fun in the pool. A nice finish for a great day.
