Bagpippers To Play Here On The 4th The two towns of Walkerton have had a special relationship and kinship over many years. For at least the last fifteen years, the Masonic Lodges and Legions of both towns have had exchange programs and sponsored trips between the two towns. The two towns have found much in common with each other. Both are small towns; Walkerton Ontario having a population so 4,687 and Walkerton, Indiana having a population of 2,066. Walkerton, Indiana is 75 miles from Chicago and Walkerton, Ontario is 84 miles from Toronto. Lake Michigan is only 28 miles from Walkerton, Indiana and Lake Huron is only 25 miles from Walkerton, Ontario. Walkerton, Ontario was first settled in 1851 due to the lead of Bruce County pioneer Joseph Walker, and Walkerton, Indiana was first settled in 1856 due to the lead of railroad builder James Walker. And as far as both towns have researched, there are no other incorporated towns in all of North America named Walkerton. On July 3, 1995, Mayor James Bolden of Walkerton, Ontario will be in Indiana to help Walkerton Indiana Council President Cheryl Rizek declare the two towns as official “Sister Cities.” The two leaders will each read an official resolution that Walkerton, Indiana is to adopt on July 3rd and Walkerton, Ontario on July 4th. Along with Mayor Bolden will be a group of other Canadian visitors, including members of the Royal Canadian Legion Bagpipe Band, who will perform during Walkerton’s 4th of July festivities. This visit continues the pattern set up years ago: that Ontario visits Indiana on the odd numbered years and Indiana visits Ontario during the even numered years. Last summer the Walkerton American Legion’s color guard performed in Ontario, and the bagpipe band performed here two years ago. The public school systems of the two Walkertons have also discussed establishing a pen pal program. Fireworks And Band At Potato Creek State Park Make plans today to enjoy a lively evening of fireworks and music at Potato Creek State Park on Saturday, July 1. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. at the beach with "Jump Start Band” performing a variety of music from rock and roil to rhythm and blues. Then at 9:00 p.m. thrill to a spectacular fireworks display over Worster Lake. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. The regular park entry fee will not be collected between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 for this event. The Lakeville Lions Gub, who co-sponsors the fireworks display, will be collecting free will donations in the park throughout the day to help offset the cost. Worster Lake will be closed between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to all boats in the interest of safety. Anyone wishing further information should call the Park at (219) 656-8186.
