POSTMASTER’S “POSTMARKS” By Linda Johnson Walkerton Postmaster . “Stamp Adhesive Approved By FDA” The Postal Service can’t replace that sandwich, snack an soft drink you might enjoy for lunch, but if you are concerned about your health and the environment, you will be happy to know the glue used on today’s postage stamps is edible and biodegradable. Many of our current stamps use a cornstarch base that is water activated. The glue is food grade, water soluble, and approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Using edible and biodegradable material on stamps goes back to the 1800’s when stamps were printed without glue and users had to apply their own adhesive. Back in those days, the adhesive used was potato starch, which mailers made themselves. By the early 1900’s, glue began to be applied to stamp paper as the last step in stamp production. But edible glue remained the staple, even as production techniques improved. Tapioca was used for a time, followed by cornstarch, usually in combination with synthetic food additives. So, if you’re health conscious and want to be environmentally correct, you can enjoy a healthy lunch, prepare personal letters or bills and affix the stamps, knowing the adhesive on the back of those stamps has FDA approval.
