DFW Will Take Comments On Deer Hunting Quotas Wildlife managers with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Fish and Wildlife have developed proposed hunting permit quotas for anterless deer for the 1995 deer hunting season. The DNR is taking public comments on the quota numbers through June 30. The DNR is proposing quotas for bonus county anterless deer permits in all of Indiana’s 92 counties totaling 205,300 permits —a 55 perecent increase over the number of permits offered last year. Bonus county permites are distributed to applicants through a random drawing. The DNR issues bonus county permits in an effort to manage deer herds throughout the state. State wildlife professionals strive to maintain the state deer herd at a level that benefits hunters and wildlife watchers while minimizing crop damage and car-deer collisions. Wildlife managers set bonus permit quotas for each county based on many different factors including landowner concerns, the desires of wildlife recreationists and previous years’ harvests. This is the first year that the DNR has presented the quotas for public comment. Wildlife managers initially sought input in early June from Indiana’s Deer Advisory Committee, a group of hunters, agricultural interests and other private individuals who are interested in deer management in the state. Response from the 16member group was mixed. Generally, members representing agricultural interests supported the proposed quotas or suggested a slight increase in the number of permits offered. Organized deer hunting groups represented on the committee generally felt that the quota numbers were too high. Other deer hunters on the committee suggested that quota numbers be set at the proposed level or modestly increased in some areas. “This is the biggest challenge we face as wildlife managers,” said Glenn Lange, the DNR’s chief of wildlife. “Different people have different tolerance levels for wildlife. Hunters typically want to keep deer populations high while farmers want to keep deer numbers down. Our job is to work with all interested parties to find a balance while maintaining our first priority of protecting the resouce. Public input, combined with biological information, is important for locating a balance between interests.” Anyone interested in the proposed anterless deer permit quotas is invited to send comments to the Division of Fish and Wildlife by June 30. All comments will be considered when the DNR sets final permit quotas. Comments may be sent to: Quota Comments Division of Fish and Wildlife 402 W. Washington, Rm.
