WALKERTON TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES Jone 5, 1995 The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on June 5, 1995 with the following members present: Cheryl Rizek, Gene Reese, Len Jaske and Gordon Hartsell. Attorney David Holmes and clerktreasurer Judy Hiler were also present. The minutes were approved as read. In an earlier meeting, the Plan Commission voted to favorably recommend that the Roger Holston subdivision, on the south side of the 900 block of Harrison Street, be approved. Gene Reese made the motion to approve. Seconded by Gordon Hartsell. Carried. Dave McKee, school superintendent, reviewed with the Council some requests to vacate public right-of-ways and create a new entrance at Urey Middle School. They are asking for approval to close the alley from Kentucky Street at the east property line of the school, vacate the alley along the northeast property line of the school, vacate Adams Street from the north property line of the school south for a distance of 60 feet, a new entrance off Washington Street onto school property and improve and widen the alley east of Washington Street to the northeast property line of the school. The Council discussed the various changes and voiced some concern over access to the License Branch, the Mahoney lot and the homes that are backed by the alleys. Attorney Holmes advised that an ordinance would have to be passed, with a notice of a public hearing being published in advance of the meeting. The public hearing will be scheduled for July 3, 1995 and will give anyone concerned with these changes a chance to be heard. Terry Baugher reported on the Adams Street storm sewer project. Baugher asked for the Council to luthorize the clerk to place the ad for bids for the project and also to authorize president Rizek to sign several documents that will be pre^ared within the next couple of days. Those documents include: INDOT right-of-way permit, IDNR notification of construction in a floodway for utility projects, IDEM construction permit application, CSX Railroad application for pipene crossing and a N & W Raiload application for pipeline agreeaent. Gene Reese made the notion to allow the clerk to place the ad and for Rizek to sign the submittals. Seconded by Len Jaske. Carried. MONTHLY REPORTS The Council reviewed the monthly Police report. Chief Sobierdski had a question about our all grass and weed ordinance. > here was some discussion of the '.eight of the weeds and how it can .ear our equipment up if we have to mow property that the owners will not maintain. Larry Dill, fire chief, reported hat they have two new firemen — Ken Eggleston and Rick Kuchel. Diere will be a training meeting at filler’s Merry Manor for Police, Fire, Ambulance and Utility departments. Dill invited the Coun'il to attend the training session. Fireworks And Band At Potato Creek State Park Make plans today to enjoy a lively evening of fireworks and music at Potato Creek State Park on Saturday, July 1. The fun begins at 7:30 p.m. at the beach with “Jump Start Band*’ performing a variety of music from rock and roll to rhythm and blues. Then at 9:00 p.m. thrill to a spectacular fireworks display over Worster Lake. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. The regular park entry fee will not be collected between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 for this event. The Lakeville Lions Club, who co-sponsors the fireworks display, will be collecting free will donations in the park throughout the day to help offset the cost. Worster Lake will be closed between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to all boats in the interest of safety. Anyone wishing further information should call the Park at (219) 656-8186. Plan Starting Activities For N.L. 4th Parade The North Liberty 4th of July Parade will have a very meaningful start to the parade this year. It will begin at 2:00. p.m. with line-up at 1:00 p.m. The V.F.W. and American Legion, Wendy Webber singing the National Anthem, taps played by Roger Kronk and a 21 gun salute will start the parade. Applications are available at Ist Source Bank and Liberty Drugs & Emporium. The firemen placed boots around town at several locations for donations to help with the cost of the parade and the fireworks. Walkerton Jr. Firemen Stampede The Walkerton Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Walkerton Jr. Fireman Stampede to be held Sunday, Juley 2, at 12:00 noon in Place Park. There will be three age groups, 5-7; 8-10 and 11-12. There will be four events for four member teams. Each event will be timed, best overall time wins. First, second and third places will be awarded. The events will be judged by firemen. Teams must fill out entry forms and return to Perry McMichael, 1424 Ohio St., Walkerton, 46574 by June 28,1995. The entry form is on Page 6 this edition. PARKING IS BEING SOUGHT FOR WALKERTON 4TH OF JULY The Friends of the 4th are in the planning stages of making an area map of parking for the 4th of July. If you are interested in providing parking for the 4th and would like it advertised, please let the committee know. 1995 Youth Talent Contest Plans Are Set The St. Joseph County 4-H Fair, in conjunction with the Indiana State Fair, will again be conducting an Indiana Youth Talent Contest. This is an open contest — not just for 4-H’ers only! The contest is open to kids ages 7 to 12, Jr. division and ages 13-21, Sr. division. Contestants must be no more than 21 years of age on August 14, 1995. Each contestant must be an Indiana resident and winners from the St. Joseph County Fair will represent this county at the Indiana State Fair August 14-20. There will be a preliminary contest on Sunday, July 30 at the St. Joe Co. 4-H Fairgrounds at 2:00 p.m. The top 3 winners in each category in both the Jr. and Sr. division will go on to the county finals on Wednesday, August 2, at the fairgrounds. A contestant may enter only once and must be a St. Joseph County resident. It is recommended that an act run no more than 3 minutes. Winners will be sent to the Indiana State Fair in each category. (No baton acts accepted, sorry!) Following are the categories: Vocal solo — female Vocal solo — male Vocal group Instrumental solo Dance solo Dance group Novelty solo Novelty group Tumbling (free X only) solo Tumbling (free X only) group Gogging solo Clogging group You must be pre-registered by Friday, July 26, which is the deadline to participate in this year’s contest. Festival Lists Dress-A-Doll Contest Rules The annual Potato Creek Festival Doll contest is here again! Stop by the North Libertry Branch Library to select a doll to dress. Categories include: bridal, patriotic, Potato Creek Days, storybook and general. Dolls must be returned by August 1. Prizes to be awarded in all categories. Winning dolls will be auctioned during the Festival. All other dolls to be donated to “Toys For Tots’’. Call the Library at 656-3664 for more information. Summer Reading Program At N. L. Library The theme of this year’s reading program is “Where In The World Is Ted E. Book Bear?’’ Pre-readers as well as readers can sign up at the Library now. Participants can set their own goal of books read. Prizes to be awarded when you reach your goal! Immunization Clinics Set For July In The Area The St. Joseph County Health Department will be conducting Immunization Clinics at North Liberty and Lakeville in early July. The clinic usually held in Walkerton, will not be held due to the conflict date of the Fourth of July. In North Liberty, the clinic will be on Tuesday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. No appointments are necessary. All children must be accompanied by a parent of legal guardian and all previous shot records are needed for immunizations. The clinic will be held at the North Liberty Community Center, 300 S. Main Street. In Lakeville, at the Old Lakeville School Project, the clinic will be held on Thursday, July 6th, from 9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Kiddies Day Parade Set For Sunday, July 2 The annual July Kiddies Day Parade is scheduled for Sunday, July 2. Sign-up will be behind the Walkerton Elementary School, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Line-up will begin with the parade starting at 2:00 p.m. The parade route is Gark Street to Georgia Street to the United Methodist Church parking lot. Categories include: Me and My Pet, My Favorite Character, Float. Peddlers (bikes, trikes and big wheels), and Open Gass. Monetary awards will be presented at the end of the parade for first, second and third place winners in each catagory. Additionally, a grand prize will be awarded from one of the catagories. All are welcome to participate or just come and watch. There is no entry fee to join the fun. If you have any questions, please feel free to call 586-2702. See you at the parade! We’re Back . . . At The Library This week catch the adventure of Rex, Dweeb, Elsa and Woog — their “smart” dinosaurs here to visit their biggest fans — the children. You can see the gang at the Walkerton Library at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 23rd. The movie lasts for 70 minutes and is free. Everyone is welcome to come, but please, no children under six without an adult. LIGHT OF THE MOON CRAFT SCHEDULED FOR WALKERTON LIBRARY Light of the Moon is the craft on June 28th from 111:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Walkerton Library. Come in and find out how to add beautiful colors to the things you see at night. To find out this wonderful secret you need only be entering grades one through six, and one of the first 10 children to register for this craft. AARP To Meet Thursday, June 22 Virginia Volz, from the state office of the American Association of Retired persons, will be in Plymouth Thursday, June 22nd, to present to all interested older residents, friends and guests of the AARP “Programs and Concerns for Senior Citizens”. Her program is designed to help older persons dispel many unnecessary fears about retirement and aging. This program is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. in the First United Church of Christ located at 321 N. Center Street in Plymouth, today, June 22, and is offered free as a public service of the Marshall County Chapter of AARP. All interested older citizens are invited to attend. In July a picnic in the park is being planned with games and fun. These meetings held each fourth Thursday of every month are planned for fun, fellowship, active learning, and even a bit of refreshment with friends and neighbors in our county. Each month a door prize is given to a lucky attendee. For further information on the chapter activities, contact Grant Shenefield at 892-6541. Mr. Shenefield, along with his wife, Alice, were recently honored with a certificate from the National headquarters of AARP for their many hours of devoted service to the citizens of Marshall County in many ditierent capacities.
