Free Fishing This Weekend In Indiana The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) offers a great way to kick off summer vacation this year —a free family fishing outing. On Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11 Indiana residents don’t need a fishing license to fish on public waters. The weekend is an ideal opportunity to plan a family fishing trip across the state or to a stream down the road. "Free Fishing Weekend is a chance to learn — or re-learn — the enjoyment of fishing," said Bill James, DNR fisheries chief. "We know that people who fish learned the sport from parents, grandparents and friends who took time to teach them." James hopes that many of the more than one million Hoosier anglers will take advantagle of the weekend to teach their families and friends the excitement and relaxation that fishing provides. In celebration of Free Fishing Weekend, 22 of Indiana’s state parks, recreation areas and fish and wildlife areas are offering special "Turn A Kid On To Fishing" events on Saturday, June 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. For more information, call a nearby state park of the Division of Fish and Wildlife at (317) 232-4080. "Legion Day" June 11 At The Veterans Home Overlooking the Wabash River is a scenic plateau of 250 acres known as "The Hill”. Since 1896, the Indiana Veterans Home at West Lafayette, has served as a tribute to Indiana citizens who served military service to their country. This facility is licensed by the Indiana State Board of Health and is the state’s larges licensed nursing home. It is a full service facility with over 500 trained professional people to serve the members. Each year The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the Legion converge on "The Hill" for their traditional “Legion Day". June 11 is the date for this year when a big spring party is given to the residents of the Home. In the past, a picnic was served to the residents, but due to many dietary restrictions, this had to be discontinued. Now, the residents eat in the respective dining rooms with some visiting guests joining in the meal. Old Mends of the Home will be visited and new friends will be made. Bingo is played by the residents in the afternoon with the prizes being donated by the Posts and Units. A concert by American Legion band members will be one of the highlights of the day along with the annual Memorial program to the deceased veterans of the Home. Visiting guests are encouraged to visit the various residence halls and greet the residents in their home atmosphere. Or, perhaps a person may choose to sit under the many majestic trees of "The Hill" and enjoy a June day among friends. June 11 is the date — pack a picnic basket and enjoy a memorable day at the Indiana Veterans Home in West Lafayette. It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. —Jerome K. Jermoe
