LIST ENTERTAINMENT FOR 1995 LAPORTE COUNTY FAIR

The 150th anniversary of the LaPorte County Fair will boast one of the finest lineups of grandstand entertainment in many years, headlined by The Charlie Daniels IBand, according to Fair secretarymanager, Louis Daube. Daube, in his first year as fair secretary-manager, also announcled that popular country and western singer Bonnie Nelson will make a return engagement to the fair in 1995. In addition, Daube added, the fair has booked Terry Mcßride and The Ride as well as returning the George Hubler International Circus and two nights of auto demolition derbies. Daube succeeds John P. Daley as fair manager after serving as president of the Fair Board for several years. Daley retired as an active manager of the fair following the 1994 event, but is assisting Daube in organizing the Sesquicentennial fair attraction. The fair opens in LaPorte on Monday, July 17, and will run through Saturday, July 22. Several major changes are planned for the anniversary event, including a reorganization of the carnival midway and the addition of a Pioneer Land exposition to the fair facilities on Indiana Road 2 at the west edge of LaPorte. Daube said contracts for the appearance of The Charlie Daniels Band, considered one of country music’s all-time greats, were just completed for 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. appearances in front of the grandstand on Saturday, July 22. Daniels is known as the “King of Southern Country Rock” and is recognized for his blended style of country, bluegrass, blues and jazz. Nelson, who last made an appearance at the LaPorte Fair in the mid 1980’s, returns by popular demand with the Stateside Expresse Band for a single performance at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 21. Her visits to the fair drew rave reviews and Daube said he was finally able to book the popular singer for 1995 despite a busy road schedule. Terry Mcßride and The Ride has been carried to the top of the country charts on several occasions, including the hit “Going Out Os My Mind”. The vocalist and his band have cut several albums as well as pop singles. The group appears for 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. grandstand performances on Thursday, July 20. The Hubler Circus has become a mainstay at the fair for the past several years and always delights fans, both young and old, with live animal acts as well as thrilling highwire and acrobatic routines. Once again this year grandstand admission will be free on a first come, first seated basis for the 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. shows. And Daube said no LaPorte fair would be complete without the action-packed demolition derbies. The crowd-pleasing demo derby opens the grandstand activities for fair week on Monday night, July 17, at 7:00 p.m., followed by the figure-eight derby on Tuesday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m. Daube said an announcement would be made in the near future when grandstand tickets will go on sale and urged patrons not to call the fair office until the ticket announcement is made. SET DATE FOR NORTHERN INDIANA BUSINESS CONFERENCE Lt. Governor Frank O’Bannon announced today that the Northern Regional Indiana Close Up Conference will be held Tuesday, June 27, at the Century Plaza in South Bend. Gose Up, a major economic development event open to all Indiana businesses, will focus on business expansion, export, regulations and state assistance for training. “Last year, the ‘Celebrate Indiana Business’ campaign was a tremendous success,” said O’Bannon, “largely because we changed the focus of Close Up from an out-of-state to an existing Indiana business attraction. That was very successful. This year, we’ve made the conferences regional to work more closely with economic development organizations at the local level and to make it more accessible to Hoosier businesses. Judging by the huge turn out at our Southerm conference in French Lick in March, more people can attend if we can cut down the travel time and get down to buisness.” O’Bannon will host the kickoff lunch and present the Lt. Governor’s Outstanding Indiana Business Awards to honor Hooiser companies that demonstrate progressive thinking in their operations. The third and final Gose Up for 1995 will be held in Indianapolis on September 19. For more information or to make reservations, contact Shivani Passey at (317) 232-4768.
