LOCAL STUDENT RECEIVES OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE AWARD Valparaiso University senior Gwendolyn Davey, Walkerton, has been given an Outstanding Leadership and Service Award by the Division of Student Affairs in recognition of contributions to the University community. To be nominated for the award, students had to be seniors graduating in May or December with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 at the time of nomination and to have demonstrated outstanding service to the University community through leadership and performance in regard to extra curricular and student life. Davey, with a social work major, was on the planning committee for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and taught MLK day sessions on ethinc diversity and sensitivity. She also served as the Student Social Work Organization’s co-chair of both the diversity and public relations committees and as the public relations representative and an executive board member of the Black Student Organization. Davey also has been a multicultural ambassador, a community tutor, and VU’s representative and delegate at the International Women’s Writing Guild Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Finalists were chosen from persons nominated by faculty, staff, and students through an evaluation of leadership, performance and dedication; quality of leadership as evidenced by involvement in a variety of activities and/or leadership positions; and all service related activities while a students. Valparaiso University was founded in 1859 and purchased in 1925 by The Lutheran University Association. It is a nationally-recognized institution of higher education, serving approximately 3,500 students annually through its Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, and Nursing, Christ (honors) College, School of Law, and Graduate and Evening Divisions. VERKLER QUALIFIES FOR ALL-STAR MEET Bryan Verkier, of Walkerton, competing for Vincennes University, earned second-team NJCAA All-American honors after placing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 49’3”. The top four finishers advance to the June 10 American Junior College All-Star Meet at Edwardsville, Illinois.
