Free Library Cards For Polk Twp. Children In Indiana libraries are funded mostly by township taxes. Each township in Indiana decides if they are willing to pay taxes to support their local library. In the Walkerton area Polk Township and North Township have decided they do not wish to help fund the library. If you live in an unserved area you can get a library card by “purchasing” one. Most libraries charge an average of what the residents in their townships are paying. To join the Walkerton-Lincoln Township Library the cost is $20.00. The card is good only at that library, unless the state card, the PLAC card, is also purchased for an additional $17.00. About one third of the children that attend John Glenn Schools live in Polk Township. Unlike their classmates, they can not come into the library and get a ’’free” library card. However, this summer from June 4th through August 15th, children up through high school may come in and get a free Summer Card. The Summer Card can be used only for children and young adults for their own materials. Children in grades 8 and below must have their parent’s signature to get a card. The Walkerton Library Board hopes that by offering these free Summer Cards, residents of Polk Township will be better able to judge if they would get $20.00 worth of use from the public library. If you have any question about getting a Summer Card or about the Library in general, please call 586-2933. INTERNET DEMONSTRATIONS AT THE LIBRARY A series of demonstrations and lecture programs on the global information network known as the “Internet” will be given at the branches of the St. Joseph County Public Library. This is an abbreviated version of The Internet Connection which has been given several times at the Main Library with great success and now the library staff is able to continue these lectures at the branch libraries. The program is designed for beginners and newcomers to electronic networking and will emphaze the resources which are available at the public workstations in the library and the branches. Telnet, Gopher and World Wide handout materials and practice exercises will be provided so that participants may try out what they have learned at a later date. Attendance is limited and preregistration is required. Those wishing to attend are asked to call the appropriate branch to do so. In North Liberty, the program will be held Monday, June 5, at 7:00 p.m., phone 656-3664. Other branch locations, time and phone numbers where the program is scheduled are: Tuesday, June 6, 5:30 p.m., Virginia Tutt Branch, 282-4637. Wednesday, June 7, 5:30 p.m. Western Branch, 282-4639.
