by Dick Fansler, graduate of John Glenn, who sang and gave impressions of Louis Armstrong, Al Jolson, George Bums, Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante and ended by singing “That’s Life.” Oldest present was Juanita Thompson (93) who graduated 75 years ago and Bernice O’Daffer (92). Caroline Thompson came the farthest, 2000 miles from Mampa, Idaho, many came from other states. The Gass of 1946 will be in charge next year, at the same place, thanks to the planning committee. Sure hope you mothers all had a very happy Mother’s Day. Would you like to know how I spent the day? Well, first of all I had to be a greeter at the Church of Christ and then after hearing a wonderful Mother’s Day message by Rev. Charles Richmond, I came home along with Theda Carlson and Beatrice O’Daffer, of South Bend, who came and accompanied me to church. Then along came my daughter, Norma Patrick, and son-in-law Gene and Brandon Stull, my great-grandson and we took off for Michigan with a picnic dinner Norma had prepared. We drove and drove and we saw lots of picnic tables along the way at New Buffalo, St. Joe, Silver Beach but no one was out as it was just too cloudy, windy and cold. We drove until 2:00 and we were all getting starved and then we spotted the Cook Nuclear Center at Bridgman, Michigan and guess what, we told them we were so hungry, couldn’t find a place to eat and they invited us to enjoy our dinner in their beautiful dining area in the basement with bathroom facilities and all. Then after we had finished our dinner, we were invited to a free tour of Sight and Sound program explaining the operation of a 2.2 million kilowatt Donald C. Cook Nuclear Plant through mechanical movement, light animation and sound effects. We even saw the smart house people will be living in

the years of 2000. It was great to see how they make electricity. We will never forget this Mother’s Day. Jay and Kari Williams and son Evan, of Crete, Illinois, Michael and Cara Holmes, of South Bend, and Ethel Rauen and Ethel Homes were all Mother’s Day guests of Travis and Joan Holmes. Evan and Patty Henry and family entertained the George Henry family for Mother’s Day along with Calvin and Clara Mae Kronk. They also celebrated Cindy’s tenth birthday. Aletha Croy recently returned home after spending the past two weeks with her daughter Janice and son, Phillip, in Birmingham, Alabama. While there, she and her daughter drove to New Orleans and was caught in that terrible rain storm and had to spend one day and night sleeping in their car at McDonald’s Restaurant. She said that was a terrible experience and doesn’t ever want to go through anything like that again. Have you noticed Craft’s Drug Store is getting a new face lift? Just be careful when you pass by. Martin’s Greenhouse is selling plants again at the place next to Bob’s Country Store. They sure have lovely plants and a big variety to choose from so do drop in and see them. It was so nice to see Dr. John Thompson, the eye doctor, at the Tyner High School banquet and he looks just like his father, who many of you had for your family doctor years ago. The doctors are certainly different today. He made house calls no matter how bad the weather was out, not so today. Your have to go the doctor’s office and boy, do they ever charge you for an office call today. Sure different than when Dr. Thompson delivered babies at home for $25.00 and now they have to go to the hospital and it cost a fortune to have a baby so I’m told.

Mrs. Santa Gaus flew down from the North Pole last Thursday to the Christmas Tree Farm and greeted 40 five-year old children from the Harrison School in South Bend along with their teachers and helpers. They were so disappointed that they didn’t get to come at Christmas time as Marylyn was all booked up so they decided to bring them last Thursday. They visited the museum, the paraplane powered parachutes, the Christmas decoration shop and then all got to visit with Mrs. Santa and sing along with her. They could all speak Spanish and so they sang Jingle Bells as Mrs. Santa played the piano. They sang it in Spanish. The children all enjoyed eating their lunch and playing on the grounds before returning to their school. Mrs. Santa then returned back to the North Pole. Please remember Marjorie Fair who is very ill at this time in St. Paul’s Retirement home. Dwain and Carol Whitmer returned to their home in Fort Myers, Florida, after spending two weeks touring four European countries. They were on an Indiana University Alumni Association sponsored trip to Switzerland, France, Germany and Holland. Included was a 7 day cruise on the Rhine and Moselle rivers. Thank you so much for your news items. It was so nice to hear from

you, Carol, and especially from Fort Myers, Florida. How many of you have your garden made? Well, here it is the middle of May and I am now going to plant my potatoes, which when Claude lived he always planted them on Good Friday, which was on April 14 so I’m a month late. As you all know, the weatherman just hasn’t cooperated at all this spring. I remember back when my mother always planted garden the first of April. We use to always plant when the old Farmer’s Almanac said it was the right sign to plant but I plant now when my garden gets plowed and I’m ready, how about you? We’ll let you know later how my garden is growing. Just received a call from Carol Smith, of Walkerton, to see if I knew of a house to rent in North Liberty. A Christian family, Craig Heim, of Ohio, would like to find a place in Walkerton or North Liberty. If you know of a place, please contact Carol. Her number is 5863097. Thanks.
