Community Club Holds Final Meeting Os Year The last meeting of the GFWC Walkerton Woman’s Community Gub for the season was a lively one. With lots of delicious hot casseroles, crisp salads and luscious desserts prepared by the members, it was a very special occasion. Alice Walker, chairman of the hostess committee, gave the devotions. She was assisted in her hostess duties by Carolyn Hancovsky and Carma Larson. Shirley Awald, secretary, read correspondence from Josephine Nowakowski who was unable to attend the meeting. She also read a letter from the American Heart Association thanking the club for their recent donation. Janet Bierly reported that the March bake sale had netted $302. There will be another bake sale in November. The secretary gave a report on the 105th Annual Convention of the GFWC/IFC in Indianapolis on April 29th and 30th at which the Walkerton Gub had won an Appreciation of Merit Award. President Barbara Simpson showed the group a book of short essays and poems composed by the Junior GFWC clubs of Indiana. She gave a report on ways of recruiting new members. She also showed the women a lovely set of crocheted doilies made by member Mildred Nolcheff which was awarded first place in the Arts and Crafts exhibit at the convention. She informed the members that the International Convention is to be held in Seattle, Washington this year. A collection was taken up for Goodwill Industries and also for the victims of the bombing in Oklahoma City.
Alfreda Onika urged members to collect more cancelled stamps which she sends to a mission that sells them to stamp collectors, the income from which is used to help needy children. Shirley Awald, who attended the State Convention in Indianapolis along with Barbara Simpson and Nadine Keiper, gave a very interesting report on the various activities. The Canine Companion project, the Art and Craft and Music scholarships and the leadership sessions were exceptionally well done. The principal speaker, a GFWC member from Sao Paulo, Brazil, Margarete Waszkis, gave a fascinating presentation. Mildred Casey was given a beautiful pot of African violets for being the one member who had never missed a meeting. Pauline Stanley got a prize for having been a member of the club the longest. The summer get-together will be a show at the Wagon Wheel Theater in Warsaw where the ladies will see “Student Prince” on Sunday, June 25th. Members who were not at the meeting and who would like to attend must get in touch very shortly with Carol Knop or Barbara Simpson. Birthday celebrants were Barbara Simpson, Pamela Kaplowitz and Verda Karn. The next meeting will be held on Friday, September Ist at 1:00 p.m. at the Walkerton Community Building.
