Your Health by Lester L. Coleman, M.D.

It is estimated that more than 30 million people of all ages are jogging every day. This is not merely a numerical survey. It involves a real threat to all of those who just put on a pair of sneakers and start off on their lonely pursuit of emotional and physical stimulation At a recent symposium on physical fitness and sports medicine, the problems that joggers are heir to were carefully evaluated. The jarring effect of running imposes a force greater than three times the body weight. 'Phis force passes through the foot and ankle each time it strikes the ground. When running downhill, this force increases to four times the body weight. If any imbalance exists in the foot, this excessive stress and strain is enormous. Many people with a slight imbalance in the foot may have no problem while standing or even walking. But, with running and jogging, the injury to the foot is tremendous. Specialists in sports medicine suggest that pieces of material, hard or soft, can be inserted into sneakers to reduce the jarring forces of running These are orthotics which allow runners greater foot control and along with rehabilitative foot exercises, help to reduce the pounding that runners sometimes experience However, orthotics are not the total answer to preventing jogging inI uries Anyone who embarks on a new program of running and jogging Jeserves to have a thorough evalua!ion of the foot structure to be sure that this fine sport is exhilarating rather than injurious. SHARE AND SHARE ALIKE — If you work a lot of puzzles and trade with friends and neighbors back and forth, you can save money by sharing. Also, when you get through with a puzzle, put your initials on the box so you won’t get the same one again at another time. G.R , Springfield, 111. BRRR! — I just love your Home Tips! TWO TIPS — I read your article in the Floyd County Times here in Hueysville, Ky., and I thought I would send some of my “Home Tips " 1. If you don’t have a cabbage cutter, take a cream can, cut the top off and bum it a little over the stove. Use that as a cutter. It works wonders (Be careful not to bum yourself.) 2. When you use your toilet paper, save the paper roll. After washing your hair, use the rolls for curlers. Doing so makes your hair bouncy and the soft rolls won’t break your hair at the ends.
