I This is only the second year for Benior Happy Ads, and the staff is moping for some increased interest land support as nine were purIchased last year. Rhen Taylor To Represent Indiana In National Contest w V K Urey Middle School Bth grader, Rhen Taylor, traveled Friday to Indianapolis to compete in the State Geography Bee and came out a winner. Rhen competed against 102 6th through Bth graders from across the state, answering questions which covered all aspects of geographical knowledge. Rhen moved from the preliminary round of competition to the final round finishing in the top two out of his preliminary group of 21. The championship came down to the last question, pitting Rhen against Daniel Sweeney, Saint Aquinas Catholic School’s representative. The final question combined geography and religion, asking the two what predominant religion the people in the newly independent countries of Central Asia had adopted. Rhen answered with the correct answer, Islam. Rhen will be representing Indiana in the National Geogrpahy Bee in Washington, D.C., on May 30 and 31. The moderator will be Alex Tremek, the television “Jeopardy" host. We congratulation Rhen and wish him the best of luck! The two competitors, Rhen Taylor and Daniel Sweeney, were both asked these three questions before the winner was determined. Question 1: If you were boarding a ship in Basel heading up the Rhine River, what country would you be in? Answer: Switzerland. Question 2: What was the only country not invited to the Summit of the Americas in Miami in the summer of '94? Answer: Cuba. Question 3: What is the predominant religion of people in the newly independent countries of Central Asia? Answer: Islam. Spring Concert Date Is Changed Due to the religious observance of Maundy Thursday on April 13, the Instrumental Spring Concert previously scheduled has been moved to Monday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the John Glenn High School auditorium. Featured performers will include the Walkerton and North Liberty Cadet Band, the Urey Concert Band and the John Glenn Concert I Band. Admission is one dollar. . Senior citizens and pre-school are admitted free along with John Glenn High School Gold and Blue Card holders. । J.G. Music Dept. Recruitment Os “New’’ Students The instrumental music department announces the recruitment of Beginning Band students for the 1995-1996 school year. On Thursday, April 20, at 7:00 p.m. in the John Glenn High School auditorim ium the music department will host an informational meeting for all students and their parents who will be in the sixth grade for the 19951996 school year. This meeting will provide the necessary information for your child to become involved in the instrumental music program in the John Glenn School Corporation. Community Good Friday Service In Walkerton The Walkerton Ministerial Association will be having a Good Friday Service at St. Patrick’s Church, 801 Tyler Street, in Walkerton. The service begins at 7:00 p.m. with Dr. Donald Lacy bringing the message. An offering will be taken to benefit the Food Pantry in Walkerton. Tim Pletcher Receives Tri Kappa State Scholarship »<> < win " :JI I MU B lit A ■BBBBt BHHBI Walkerton Tri Kappa, Epsilon Chi Chapter, is proud to announce that Tim Pletcher is the recipient of a Kappa Kappa Kappa State Academic Scholarship. Tim, the son of Dirk and Kay Pletcher, 505 Indiana Street, Walkerton, was a 1992 graduate of John Glenn High School and is currently enrolled at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Terre Haute, majoring in chemical engineering. The state scholarship is awarded for academic ability, potential, activities and honoraries, community involvement, and high moral character. Congratulations to Tim Pletcher. Select Parade Theme For N.L. 4th Os July Parade “Honor The Efforts” is the theme of the North Liberty Firemen’s 4th of July Parade. In recognition of the 50 year anniversary of World War II (1945-1995), the 4th of July committee would like to dedicate all activities of the 4th of July, for the efforts of all people who sacrificed their lives during that time. The successful conclusion of World War II required the efforts of people from all walks of life, giving in a myriad of ways. Remember Rosie the Riveter, Mom’s victory garden, food, gas and heat rations, scrap drives, servicemen, Civil Defense and so much more. Keep in mind the theme “Honor The Efforts” in preparing your float for entry in the parade. More information will come at a later date. The date of the prom is April 22, from 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight at Cheers Banquet Hall, LaPorte. JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES April 4, 1995 f Regular And Executive Session I CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL I CALL The Board of School Trustees of John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on April 4, 1995 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn ■ High School. All members were । present. The School Board along ‘ with the superintendent and approximately ten observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Approval of minutes for the March 21, 1995 regular session were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS — 506 through 583 A motion was made by Ben Smith, seconded by David Gensinger, to approve claims numbered 506 through 583. The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE — None RECOGNITIONS Mr. Brent Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementry School, thanked Ray & Kenny’s Super Valu for checks totaling $283.26 received by North Liberty Elementary for their participation in Ray & Kenny’s Educational Advantage Program. Mr. Kaufman invited the Board and community to attend the upcoming P.T.A. meeting on April 20 at 7:00 p.m. “Homework” will be the topic of guest speaker Janet Burch The North Liberty Elementary School Annual Talent Shows are planned for April 21 (grades 4-6) at 1:00 p.m. North Liberty Elementary School students are being registered to attend a Soccer Clinic to be held on May 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Plymouth High School. April 12 is Environmental Day at North Liberty Elementary School. The students will be working in the Outdoor Lab. Open House for the Outdoor Lab will be held on May 13. The public is invited to attend. Dignitaries throughout the State have also been invited. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1:00 p.m. and a number of activities that will continue until 3:00 p.m. The community will be able to tour the area following the ribbon cutting. Mrs. Marilyn Lightfoot, principal at Walkerton Elementry School, reported that Walkerton Elementary School and North Liberty Elementary School gifted/talented students participated in the contest "Knowledge Master Open ”, This was a statewide contest by computer on March 22 and was a test over general knowledge. Out of 39 schools, Walkerton Elementary scored 10th and North Liberty 19th. both in the top 20 of the State. Summer School Enrichment Opportunities are being proposed. If 15 students sign up, the class will be recommended for Board approval. Mr. Mike Shuler, principal at John Glenn High School, announced that the spring play, “Time Out for Ginger", will be presented on April 7 and 8. The Senior Art Students Display will precede the play. A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Robert Schaeffer, to accept the donation of $283.86 from Ray & Kenny’s (continued on Page 16)
