POPPY FACTS Children of war veterans left in need by the disability of their fathers benefit directly from the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day, according to the national organization of the American Legion Auxiliary. On Poppy Day each year more than 25 million poppies made by disabled veterans are distributed throughout the country under the supervision of the American Legion Auxiliary. Approximately 125 thousand volunteer workers from the Auxiliary and other organizations take part in this annual program. By wearing a veteran handmade poppy on the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day each American can honor the sacrifices made by our service men and women while assisting the living. “Think Spring — Think Poppy”. More News From Historical Society If a person reads the microfilm of old Walkerton papers, they come across many items of unexplained persons, places or things. Can you, the public, shed some light on the following: § Location of “German” town in the area of Beherns store. Presumed to be located on Harrison Street or at least ‘north’ of the Nickle Plate Railroad. § Also, an area west of Walkerton referred to as “Black Oak.” And, where was the Usher School on the Plymouth-LaPorte Trail in the Walkerton area? § Where was “a store in West Troy,” Not West York? Who was the owner? Does anyone have a photo of the first truck stop, now known as Welco? Or, Stan & Jan’s Drive In, east on #6, Walkerton? Or, a picture of the early Heinz Pickle Factory? If you would allow the Walkerton Historical Society to make copies of the above or copies of any early Walkerton business or place, it would be appreciated. The microfilmed Walkerton papers can be read at either the Walkerton Public Library or the St. Joseph Co. Library, South Bend. The history of Walkerton can be located in these invaluable papers. Read and enjoy! AREA VETERANS! Since the 50th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe, May 8, 1995) is fast approaching, we would like to hear from any Walkerton area veteran (or veteran’s spouse) who was in military service in Europe during World War 11. (This request is exclusive of D-Day stories that were published last summer.) Next August 14 will be the 50th Anniversary of VJ Day (Victory in Japan). At that time, we would also like to publish stories of veterans who were in service in the Pacific. Please contact The IndependentNews at 586-3139 or call 5863450 to relate your stories.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DIVINE MERCY DEVOTION On February 22, 1931, a young Polish Nun, Sister Faustina Kowalska, saw a vision of Jesus with rays of mercy streaming from the area of his heart. He told her to have an image painted to represent this vision and to sign it, “Jesus, I trust in you!” Calling her the Apostle and Secretary of his mercy. He ordered her to begin writing a diary so others would learn to trust in Him. In a series of revelations, He taught her that his mercy is unlimited and available even to the greatest sinners, and He revealed special ways for people to respond to His mercy. By the time of Sr. Faustina’s death in 1938, devotion to The Divine Mercy had already begun to spread throughout Eastern Europe. In July of 1940, Fr. Joseph Jarzebowski, a Polish Marian priest fleeing from war-torn Poland, prayed to the merciful Saviour to help him escape, vowing to spend his life spreading the Divine Mercy message. He arrived safely on American soil in May, 1941, and Marians in Detroit and Washington, D.C., were soon distributing Mercy of God leaflets, prayer cards, and other materials. By 1944, a group of Marians opened a new house and mercy apostolate on Eden Hill in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. By 1953, the apostolate had become the international center for the Divine Mercy Devotion, and in 1960 the Marians on Eden Hill completed construction of a shrine to the Mercy of God. The shrine has now become the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy, and the apostolate has become the Marian Helpers Center, a modern religious publishing house spreading devotion to the mercy of God and to Mary immaculate. The process for the beautification of Sr. Faustina was begun in 1966. On March 7, 1992, Sr. Faustina was declared Venerable; on December 21, 1992, a healing through her intercession was declared a miracle; and on the Sunday after Easter, April 18, 1993 (Mercy Sunday), she was solemnly beatified in Rome by Pope John Paul 11. She is now officially known as Blessed Faustina Kowalska.
