32-member troupe. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and features their unique and joyous salute to the music of America. The Chorus has performed to standing ovations from the grand halls of Vienna to the tip of the Alps of Switzerland; by the canals of Venice and through the Black Forest of Germany; and more recently throughout Romania and the Soviet Union. Among the Chorus’ credits are television commercials for Kentucky Fried Chicken, Mazda and TWA; and performances with Bob Hope, Victor Borge, Tony Bennett, Steve Allen, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Della Reese, Art Linkletter, Melissa Manchester, and Bobby Goldsboro. The Chorus has recorded four, full-length albums, the first entitled “A Little Magic ... and a Lot of Fun!”, the second a Christmas album called “A Little Christmas Magic”, the third “On the Sunny Side of the Street”, and the fourth, another Christmas album entitled “The Best Gift of All.” Begun in 1970, the Chorus quickly expanded and soon encompassed boys of all races, faiths,
creeds, nationalities, and ethnic origins. In 1974, the Chorus became a non-profit corporation. Boys pay no tuition since the program is financed entirely by concert fees, summer concert tours, donations, fundraisers, and record/tape/CD sales. Boys are admitted through a rigorous, eight to twelve week audition process. They must then train for an additional six to twelve months, pass further auditions, and learn the basic concert repertoire of forty pieces before being advanced into the Concert Chorus. Headquartered at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa, California, the Chorus conducts four week night and one Saturday morning rehearsal per week. A boy attends two rehearsals one week and three rehearsals the following week on an alternating basis. Boys are taught the music using an adaptation of the solfeggio method, and are provided with professional voice instruction. Concert tours, undertaken each year, number 20 to 40 days in length and the Touring Chorus is selected annually from among Concert Chorus members. Candidates for Touring Chorus status must have attended at least one of the Chorus’ annual, week-long music training camps, exhibited a high level of self-discipline and personal organization, and demonstrated a strong ability to interact socially with other Chorus members. A concert tour is a unique educational experience for every participant. Rehearsals and preparations for concerts ae conducted in new and various situations, sometimes with an orchestra or band, sometimes with celebrity artists and entertainers. Technical aspects of staging and presenting concerts such as stage management, lighting and sound system engineering, and production coordination are observed and learned. On tour, the Chorus has many times traveled to and performed in hospitals and homes for the chronically ill. The boys have successfully hosted days for the handicapped at fairs and exhibitions at which they have been performing. Three European tours, the Japanese tour, and seventeen Canadian tours have introduced the boys to other cultures and languages. Don’t miss the last performance of the 1994-95 Performing Arts Series! Post 189 To Hold “Jam Session” Friday has been designated as “Jam Session” night, starting at 7:00 p.m. All musicians are invited. Whether you play or just want to listen or sing along, stop by. These are some of the most enjoyable times many of us have ever had, players as well as audience. Some of the players have had their own bands, or are presently in a band. Others just play for their own enjoyment. Who knows who you might meet? One thing guaranteed, you’ll have a good time. Last jam session six guitar players sat around a table. We heard some great music. As more musicians find out about it, more will stop in so “come on down! to the Walkerton American Legion, Friday night.
