of pops, composer/comedian Marvin Hamlisch. Millions of people know Hamlisch as a musical genius (not everybody gets into Julliard at age seven . . . ) He’s won 3 Oscars, 4 Grammys, a Tony, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize. He just finished a tour as musical director for the soldout Barbra Streisand tour of England and the U.S., and played to 250,000 people last July with the Boston Pops. Most people know Hamlisch from the music he crated for “A Chorus Line’’, “Bananas’’, “The Way We Were’’, “The Sting”, and “They’re Playing Our Song”. Many are also familiar with his scores for “The Spy Who Loved Me”, “Ice Castles”, “Starting Over”, “Ordinary People” and “Sophie’s Choice”. People who start their day with “Good Morning, America”, are listening to Marvin’s theme music. He’s given America much of it most singable, danceable, romanceabie tunes. What many people don’t know about Hamlisch — if they haven’t caught his act on TV or seen him live — is that he’s not just a musical genius; he’s also a terrific entertainer. One New York Times reviewer confessed, “He had the audience in stitches”. Hamlisch is in a class by himself, and Firefly planners are thrilled that he has agreed to open the festival season. Patrons will have guaranteed tickets and seating for Marvin Hamlisch and Friends. In addition to patron and season tickets, approximately 3,500 individual tickets will be available for the opening night concert. Patron Party The annual opening-night patron party will take its cue from the evening’s entertainer. Since Firefly is bringing the best of Broadway to Michaian, party planners will be creating a New York-style deli for pre-concert dining. From the decor to the dill pickles, the party is going to be an entertaining recreation of the classic deli in the style of New York’s Zabar’s or Kauffman’s Deli in Skokie, Illinois. It’s a good thing that the party takes place in a lovely park. Patrons may need to take a brisk walk after the hors d’oeuvres and entrees, and before attacking the deli desserts. Patrons will be Firefly’s guests at the opening night party and will receive complimentary tickets to all 10 performances throughout the season.
