classrooms, for writing the essay answering the question, “What does the D.A.R.E. program mean to me?’’. Essay winners were Kayla Izdepski, Sara Sokol, Tony Shepherd and Mollie Pletcher. Mollie Pletcher’s essay was judged first place overall in the Walkerton fifth grade calss by an independent panel of educators. She and her parents will join other winning students at the Marshall County D.A.R.E. banquet to be held later this Spring. Sheriff Ed Criswell spoke at the D.A.R.E. graduation. He emphasized how important it is to continue teaching children the skills to help them resist drugs and alcohol. He spoke of the need to have community support for the D.A.R.E. program because of changes in the personnel at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department. He suggested that the students, parents
and community members contact the Walkerton Town Council to make the Board members aware of the need for local support. Ideally, a Walkerton Police Department would best serve the students of Walkerton Elementary School. D.A.R.E. ESSAY By Mollie Pletcher I feel that D.A.R.E. is a very successful program. Since the day that I learned about drugs I knew I didn’t want to ever try them. D.A.R.E. helped me understand the pressures from friends that would be coming up in junior high and high school. Office Heck was a wonderful instructor because he would act out the pressures and make it teel like you are really being offered drugs or whatever the situation was. When the high school students came over to our school they really surprised me. They had said that they had only been offered drugs once or twice and that when they said no they were left alone. I thought that students were offered drugs constantly and people usually wouldn’t take no for an answer. D.A.R.E. was something very fun even though we learned many things. We have learned 15 different vocabulary words and each was fun to learn. There was also Officer Heck’s partner, Sedrick. Sedrick is a bear but he still is fun to have in the room. Officer Heck did not only talk about drugs. He also talked about gangs and violence. He told us what to do and what not to do to avoid gangs. He told us some of the gang symbols and told us not to wear shirts or pants with any of those symbols. We also talked to about our reputation. Officer Heck told us that if we have a bad reputation we will be blamed for bad things that we didn’t do. He also said that the things that can cause bad reputations are: drinking, smoking, fighting, and taking weapons places. He also explained that when you have a good reputation you will have many friends and everyone will trust you. 1 have decided never to drink, smoke or be in a gang because all of these things are hazardous to our lives and our family and friends lives. Right now I have a good reputation and I plan to keep it. Pictured here are, front row, left to right: Share Oke, Johanna Hathaway, Danielle Ludwig and Holly Legge.
