The John Glenn 1994-95 girls junior varsity basketball team won the 12th annual Bi-County JV tournament and went undefeated in Northern State Conference action enroute to a sparkling school record 17-2 campaign. Coach Dan Hutton’s quintet became ther first Glenn team to win the junior varsity Bi-County affair in the 12 year running of the tournament. The locals eliminated Bremen in the opening night of play ending a five year domination of the tourney by the Lions. The Falcons then clipped Argos 44-28 in the semi-final round before dowing New Prairie 30-22 in the championship tilt. The Cougars won their semifinal contest by forfeit and rested while Glenn played the Dragons at 9:00 a.m. and then returned to play New Priaire for the crown at noon. Glenn has been tourney runner-up twice in 1993 and 1988. The Falcons 17 victories is also a school best as well as their .895 winning percentage. Coach Hutton’s club averaged 31.9 tallies a game while giving up only 20.1 points for a winning margin of 11.8 markers a game. The young Falcons, nine freshmen and one sophomore, scored 46 points against Westville for a season high offensively while holding the Blackhawks to a defensive low of eight points. Defensively, the Falcons held 10 of the 17 opponents to 20 or less points. The team’s only losses came at the hands of South Bend Riley in overtime and Plymouth. Both losses came early in the season before the Falcons reeled of 12 consecutive wins to closeout the season, another team record. 13 game stranglehold by the Lions. This year’s team is the only group to defeat Bremen twice in a season. Glenn has only defeated the Lions three times in 19 meetings at the JV level. Coach Hutton’s charges breezed through NSC competiton with an unblemished 7-0 mark. The local gals averaged 30.7 points per game in league play to just 19.4 points an outing for their opponents for a fine 11.3 winning margin. It marked the first time a local JV team had defeated all seven schools in the league in a season. Glenn is now 53-20 over the last four years at the junior varsity level for a very impressive .729 winning percentage. The Falcons have posted four straight winning seasons, another JV record. During the last four campaigns coach Hutton’s teams and players have nearly rewritten the local girls junior varsity record book. Individually, the locals were led in scoring by Heidi Wasteney and Bridget Honaker with 135 and 132 points, respectively. Holly Legge also topped the century mark with 106 tallies. This marked the first time three players have scored more than 100 points in a season, and all three are freshmen. Legge led the team from the 15-foot stripe with a .625 percentage and Ojeta Oke was the leader in the field goal department with an outstanding .525 shooting percentage. JoHanna Hathaway also shot well from the field with a .477 mean. Honaker also led the team in rebounding and steals with 92 and 68, respectively. Share Oke was a close second in the rebounding department with 87 retrives. All the girls improved over the course of the season but coach Hutton thought Hathaway showed the most improvement. This year’s team possessed all the ingredients that make up a championship team, according to their coach. The group was very talented, hard working, had a lot of heart, loved each other and the game and were very coachable. They were extremely close as friends on and off the courts. Coach Hutton felt this was without a doubt, the best defensive team he has had. As the old
saying goes offense wins games but defense wins championships and this team adopted that motto. Coach Hutton feels girls basketball is on a definite upswing at John Glenn because in addition to this year’s results on the varsity and junior varsity, the eighth grade team is currently 11-1 and is tall and talented. Hoever, he warned that all the returning players must continue to work hard in the off season in order to get to the next level and to be competitive at that level.
