UREY CHESS TEAMS COMPETE IN REGIONAL COMPETITION
ne The Urey Chess teams competed in regional chess play at Michigan at ’ City on Saturday, February 25. IS ' The three Urey teams were among ' 67 teams competing in the five , as rounds of play. Urey’s C team with members Matthew Alspaugh, Mike Alexander, Luke Batman and Chris Long finished with 2‘/i wins and B*/i points. The A and B teams were among the top seven, qualifying for the state competition which will be held in Terre Haute in March. Urey’s top individual players were Casey Butler and Matt Gineris, each with 4 1 /i points our of 5. Andy Schmeltz and Andy Zellers both finished with 4 points. The teams are coached by teacher Lisa Cox.

LADY FALCONS MAKE IT THREE WINS IN A ROW Urey Middle School’s Lady Falcons handed New Prairie a 30-18 defeat to capture the school’s third straight Urey eighth grade girls basketball tournament championship at North Liberty Saturday afternoon. The three consecutive titles by the Falcons is the first time a team has accomplished this feat in the tournament’s history. The tourney title stretched the Falcons win streak to seven and improved their overall record to 9-1. New Prairie returns to Urey for a rematch today (Thursday) with a 4:30 start. The Falcons advanced to the title game with a 42-6 rout of Jimtown and the Cougars edged LaPorte Boston 31-29 in the other morning semi-final tilt. The Falcons completely shackled the Cougars offense in the initial stanza enroute to an 8-0 edge at the end of the first quarter. The winners built a 15-4 bulge at the intermission and were on top 21-8 at the start of the final six minute segment. The Falcons never trailed in either tournament contest. Jennifer Traub turned in a fine all around performance to take game scoring honors with 14 points for the victorious Falcons. Alissa Fuentes added 4 markers followed by Tammy Wasteney with 3, Beth Honaker 3, Becca Strahm 2, Lynna Potts 2, and Melissa Craig 2. Rout Jimtown In the morning contest the locals had little trouble in routing the aggressive and physical Jimmies. The local gals led 10-2 at the first stop and 18-6 at halftime. The Lady Jimmies went scoreless in the second half as the Falcons led 31-6 at the end of three periods of play. The winners outscored Jimtown 32-0 after the Jimmies had cut the Falcons’ lead to 10-6 early in the second period. Beth Honaker and Jennifer Traub paced the well balanced “Big Black’’ attack with 15 and 11 points, respectively. LADY FALCONS DUMP LAPORTE KESLING 39-25 Urey Middle School’s high flying Falcons handed LaPorte Kesling a 39-25 setback in the eight grade girls basketball action Wednesday afternoon on the local hardwood. The victory boosted the Falcons season record to 6-1 while Kesling fell to 4-4. The Falcons came out running in the initial period and jumped to a 14-3 lead at the first stop. Kesling could not get untracked offensively against Urey’s tight defense as the locals cruised to a huge 27-7 bulge at halftime. The visitors closed the gap to 29-15 at the third stop. A quick spurt in the final quarter pushed the winners lead to 37-18 with just over two minutes remaining. Jennifer Traub topped all scorers with 10 points to lead the Falcons. Beth Honaker chipped in 8 tallies followed by Tammy Wasteney with 6, Alissa Fuentes 4, Lynna Potts 4, Becca Strahm 3, Melissa Craig 2 and Jessica Traub 2. B-team Edged The Falcon B-team suffered a heartbreaking 33-32 setback at the hands of the Komets. The locals trailed 10-6 at the first stop but battled back to take a 16-12 edge to the dressing room at

the intermission. The Komets came out strong in the early going of the third quarter and built a seemly commanding 12-point lead. But the Falcons roared back to close to 28-26 at the end of the third stanza. A Falcon field goal attempt in close rolled around and off the rim at the horn ending a gallant comeback effort on the part of the local team. Scoring for Urey were Jessica Ellis 8, Jen Shaw 6, Misty Whitmer 6, Jessica Traub 6, Roberta Reinhold 4 and Korey Whitmer 2. BTH GRADE GIRLS UY BY LA VILLE 45-9 Urey’s Lady Falcons used a strong defensive effort to fly by visiting LaVille 45-9 in eighth grade girls basketball play Thursday afternoon. The local gals used a sticky man-to-man pressure defense to completely shut down the Lancers offensive attack and kept alive a Falcon five game win streak to improve to 7-1 on the year. The visitors could only muster two field goals in the contest. Urey raced to an 11-3 first quarter lead and enjoyed a 22-3 advantage at the intermission. The winners led 32-7 at the third stop and then outscored the blue clad visitors 13-2 in the final frame. Beth Honaker paced another well balanced Falcon attack with 11 points. Misty Whitmer added 8 markers followed by Jennifer Traub with 7, Jessica Traub 6, Alissa Fuentes 4, Becca Strahm 3, Jessica Ellis 3, Tammy Wasteney 2 and Lynna Potts 1.
