which was a record year in giving to so many worthy organizations in our area. So please continue to shop and give your donations as they really do great work in our town. Thanks again to all who donate, price and clerk each week to make their mission possible. Please remember our paper carrier, Bill Ross who had the misfortune of falling and cracking six ribs. He is home from the hospital and his address is 2005 So. Olive, South Bend, Indiana 46613. We sure miss you, hurry and get well, Bill. Betty Stombaugh is going to be 93 on March 10. A special program is going to be presented at the Mennonite Church on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. by Lisa Yoder on her trip to Russia and Tim Graber on his trip to Romania. The public is welcome to attend. Do any of you know what the population of North Liberty is today? Back in 1928 it reached one thousand as it was really a growing town in the 19205. There was a bakery, O’Connor Electric Shop, North Liberty Lumber & Coal, North Liberty Silo & Concrete Shop, whose president was M.C. Gark that manufactured building materials including silos, chimney and cement blocks. In addition there were five garages, four restaurants and ice cream parlors, Farmers Merchant Bank and fourteen shops. Transportation was provided by two railroads as well as
the South Bend Bremen Motor Bus Company which ran three buses daily through North Liberty. My how our town has changed. But I do remember later we had our own telephone office and post office and even funeral home. But I do have some good news, as we have a new store that is opening soon and then I will tell you all about it. Would you like to know what the population is today? Well, I was told that it is now 1,366 so we really haven’t grown much even though there seems to have been a lot of new houses built in the area. Os course, we have lost a lot of dear people when you stop to think about it. Virginia Bradford, a resident of Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, returned to the nursing home on Friday after spending the past week in St. Joseph Medical Center. Well, March is here and Saturday seemed like spring was here. Do you remember when mother would give you sulphur and black strap molasses because she said it cleared your body of “winter geons’’ and built up your blood because it had iron in it. Another cure in the spring was sassafras tea which was supose to purify your blood. My husband years ago would always go out and dig up some sassafras roots, boil them and make tea and I hated the stuff. How about you? Just talked to Mrs. Alan Kaser on Redwood Road and she told me they have their maple trees tapped, the sugar water is running and they have made maple syrup twice already, so 1 put my order in as I still like the pure stuff. Congratulations to Bill and Sue Dittmar on their 25th wedding anniversary. To celebrate they took a five day cruise to Mexico. While there they went sightseeing and even went snorkeling and said the fish were beautiful. Happy anniversary from all your many friends. Gene and Norma Patrick spent the weekend at the Ramada Inn in Indianapolis. On Saturday evening they called on Gene’s cousin, Kent Shoemaker and friend Lori and really surprised them. They all had a good time together. Flora Hough is still a patient in Memorial Hospital after having the misfortune of falling. She was moved to the Bth floor today. Her son Joe and his wife is to arrive from Texas on Monday to spend some time with the family. The Ceritified driver from Chicago who delivers groceries to 5 Star and who asked about how North Liberty got its name told the girls at the store that he liked my news so much that he was going to buy a paper every week. How about that? Please remember Gark Dare who is ill in his home and needs our prayers and a call or cheer up card. Miracles happen and we pray for a miracle in his behalf. Jeff Patrick and friend Lorie, who are on spring break from Indiana State College, Terre Haute, are spending some time with his grandmother, Nell Patrick, in Walkerton.
