two years. Some customers have begun bringing their own manicure kits to make sure they are the only people using these implements. Other states that have not already put similar rules into effect, are expected to do so in the near future. Apropos of health legislation, although this column is not political, I must take issue with Speaker Newt Gingrich who recently spoke against some of the policies of the FDA (the Food and Drug Administration). He said the failure of the FDA to act quickly on new drugs impacts on drug companies and affects jobs. He also said it was unfair for patients needing these drugs to have to wait so long to get them. He felt the FDA’s role in these matters should be cut back or cut out. However, Mr. Gingrich should be reminded that because the FDA is relatively slow in assessing safety and effectiveness of drugs, this country has escaped some of the tragedies that have affected populations where government regulations are not so strict. Two examples come to mind: Thalidomide (touted as a safe aspirin
substitute for pregnant women) was held up for further testing by the FDA after its introduction in Europe. Within a year, thousands of malformed children were bom to the European women who took the drug. There was also an ulcer drug which was widely available in Canada and on the Continent, but was held back by the FDA.

Q. I can’t get myself to discuss this problem with my doctor. I have a vaginal discharge which is causing me a lot of anguish. Can you make any suggestions? A. I most certainly can. But first let me discuss your problem. Do you have any idea how many hundreds of thousands of women have a vaginal discharge which can be readily diagnosed and cured? I doubt that you, even with your hypersensitivity, would not gain satisfaction knowing that you are not alone with this problem. I hope that your anxiety will be assuaged long enough to induce you
to seek the medical help you obviously need. The two most common vaginal infections are caused by the trichomona and the candida organisms. Once the distress of itching and discharge become apparent, it is very easy to have a smear made to establish the diagnosis and start intensive treatment. The new drugs that are now available are quite remarkable both in the efficacy in curing the infection and preventing recurrence. Mature adult women must know that a vaginal infection is nothing to be ashamed of. There is no need to keep it hidden. Your doctor will certainly keep in confidence this and any other problem you have. It is difficult to believe that in this day of sophistication there are still people who will not reveal a “personal problem” to their physicians. It is remarkably naive to believe that your doctor will find this medical problem sufficiently interesting to make it a topic for social discussion. ©1995 by King Features Synd.

Here is a remarkable hand from the France-Italy match in 1967. It features an example of brilliant defense by the Italian star, Giorgio Belladonna, who sat West. Belladonna, from time immemorial an aggressive bidder, opened with one spade and the French North-South pair got to three notrump on the bidding shown. Belladonna made his first good move when he led a diamond instead of a spade. Declarer won with dummy’s queen and returned the three of clubs. East could have settled declarer’s hash then and there had he grabbed the ace and returned a diamond. But East played low and declarer won with the jack as Belladonna discarded the queen of spades! South realized he would surely go down if he persisted with clubs, so he shifted his attention to hearts, cashing the A-K-Q-J. Belladonna had to make two discards and threw a diamond and a spade. Declarer’s only chance for a ninth trick was to endplay West. Accordingly, he cashed the A-K of spades, planning to put Belladonna on lead with a third spade to force him to concede a diamond to the king But on the A-K of spades Belladonna dropped the J-10, retaining the seven. When declarer then exited with a spade, East won with the nine and returned a diamond to put the contract down one. At the second table, the Italian North-South pair also got to three notrump, but when West chose the queen of spades as his opening lead, declarer had no difficulty making ten tricks after forcing out the ace of clubs.
