NELLIE JANE SMITH Nellie Jane Smith, 100, of Miller’s Merry Manor, Walkerton, formerly of 706 Ohio Street, Walkerton, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the nursing home after an illness. She was bom October 19, 1894, in Canton, Illinois, and lived most of her life in Walkerton. On May 3, 1916, in Walkerton, she married Cloyd Smith, who died February 11, 1976. Mrs. Smith was a housewife and a former cook for the Walkerton High School. Surviving are two daughters, Iva Clark and Vada Stull, both of Walkerton; seven grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. A son, Ralph Smith, and sister, Grace Rensberger, and two brothers, Clifford and Frank Hahn, preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith was a member of the of the Extension Homemakers Demonstration Club and the oldest living member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the church with Dr. Donald C. Lacy officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may call from 3:00 - 5:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the NusbaumElkin Funeral Home, and one hour prior to services Friday at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Walkerton United Methodist Church. ROGER 0. ALBERT Roger O. Albert, 40, of 103 Muskin Road, Walkerton, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 28, in St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend of natural causes. He was bom February 2, 1955, in South Bend. He had been employed at Polygon, in Walkerton, for the past four years. Surviving are two sons, Chad and Brett, both of South Bend; his mother, Martha Albert, of Walkerton; four sisters, Marcia Lichtenbarger and Alice Rizek, both of Walkerton, Manda King, of North Liberty, and Mary C. Konderla, of LaPaz; two brothers, Williams L., of Walkerton, and Ronald D. 11, of South Bend. He was a member of the North Liberty Church of the Brethren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Helping Hand Fund, Church of the Brethren, North Liberty. ARTHUR E. SHIRLEY Arthur E. Shirley, 89, of 804 Virginia Street, Walkerton, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after an illness. He was born January 30, 1906, in Walkerton. On June 27, in Greenland, Indiana, he married Marjorie A. Pope, who survives. Mr. Shirley was the former owner of Shirley Case and was postmaster at Walkerton from 1944 to 1968. Surviving are a daughter, Sherrell Stasiak, of South Bend; a son, Arthur E. Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; five grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Hortense Wray, of Grapevine, Texas. Mr. Shirley was a member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church, 68-year member of Masonic Lodge 619 F&AM, where he was Master in 1933. He was a member of South Bend Scottish Rite and a life member of the Murat Shrine Temple, Indianapolis. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday in the Nusbaum-Elkin Funeral Home, Walkerton. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. HENRY KOTAL Henry Kotal, 79, of 30300 Osborne Road, North Liberty, died at 7:00 a.m. Saturday in his home after an illness. He was born November 2, 1915, in South Bend and was a lifetime area resident. On May 20, 1950, in LaPorte, he married Mary E. "Betty” Reed, who died April 7,1988. Mr. Kotal retired after 30 years of service from Allis Chalmers, LaPorte, and he also was a farmer. Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Klodzinski and Patricia Gemmer, both of North Liberty, and Karen Wiltfong, of Walkerton; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; four sisters, Margaret VanDeKeere and Helen Trippel, both of Mishawaka, Genevieve Semak, of South Bend, and Hildegarde Firestone, of North Liberty; a brother, Joseph, of North Liberty, a half sister, Mary Dooms, of South Bend; and a half brother, Frank Kotal, of North Liberty. Burial was in Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. The A. M. Manuel Funeral Home, North Liberty, was in charge of the arrangements. KENNETH W. WAGNER, SR. Kenneth W. Wagner, Sr., 76, of 201 W. Maple Ave., North Liberty, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday in his home after an illness. Mr. Wagner was born July 14, 1918, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. On October 27, 1945, in South Bend, he married Elaine Marie Hoover. She survives. He retired in 1980 from Wells Aluminum after 10 years of service and was a former employee of Bendix Corp, in production control for 23 years. Also surviving are a daughter, Janice Elaine Leak, of Indianapolis; two sons, Kenneth W. Jr., of Elkhart, and Terry R., of North Liberty; four grandchildren; and a brother, Raymond R., of Niles. He was a member of North Liberty United Methodist Church and Order of Easter Star Chapter 290, treasurer of Masonic Lodge 266 and a veteran of World War 11. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc. of American Cancer Society. GLEN F. WRIGHT Glen F. Wright, 99, of Maple Road, Lakeville, died at 9:00 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, of natural causes. He was bom March 1, 1895 in North Liberty and was a lifelong area resident. On July 12, 1933, in Knox, he married Pearl E. Sherman, who survives. Mr. Wright was a former custodian at Lakeville School and a self-employ-ed retired farmer. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, March 23, at 2:00 p.m. in the Palmer Funeral Home, Lakeville, with Rev. James H. Snell officiating. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3:00 to 7:00. p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Beaver Creek Wesleyan Church, North Liberty, of which he was a member. The state of Tennessee gets its name from Tanssie, an Indian village in the region.
