THE LEGION CORNER By Bill Flaugher When those who fought for the freedoms our American flag represents wanted to make sure the flag would be treated with respect, who drafted the first flag code back in 1923? We did, The American Legion. And who is at the forefront of efforts today to gain a constitutional amendment to protect the flag? The American Legion, of course. As veterans so World War II came home, who drafted to original GI Bill of Rights that helped more young people than ever before attend college and improve the standard of living for generations to come? We did, The American Legion. Who established a youth baseball program in 1925 that became the training ground for 65 percent of today’s professional baseball players? Who created Boys State and Boys Nation? Who sponsors the National High School Oratorical Contest that fosters greater understanding of the U.S. Constitution and provides thousands upon thousands of dollars in college scholarships every year? Who spoke out as early as 1966 about the fate of American POWs and MIAs in Vietnam? Who was the largest single financial contributor to the Vietnam Verterans Memorial in Washington? Who took the federal government to court for its failure to pursue the effects of Agent Orange on Vietnam Veterans? Who formed the “Family Support Network’’ to assist the families of service men and women deployed during Operation Desert Sheild/Desert Storm? Who continues to fight for adequate funding for veterans health care, for a new GI Bill and for good jobs for veterans who have served their country? I’m speaking of the men and women of the American Legion. We’re just everyday people from all walks of life who share the common bond of having served our country in uniform during wartime. We call ourselves Legionnaires because we are part of that great unbroken line of citizen-soldiers who returned from military service to do battle on the home front for the preservation of a great America. For 75 years, Legionnaires have fought for veterans benefits. We’ve fought for a strong military. And we’ve worked for the moral upbringing of this nation’s children and youth. The American Legion today is active and growing. Already the young veterans of the Desert Storm ara are taking their places alongside Legionnaires from World War I, World War 11, Korea and Vietnam. The future lies before our nation, and Legionnaires look forward with anticipation, for this much is known about the future: The American Legion will continue to influence the nation for many tomorrows because the cause is right and true. We call ourselves Legionnaires — and we’re proud of all that we - are doing for America. CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TRIP A cross-county ski trip to the Manistee National Forest will be offered by the St. Joseph County Park & Recreation Department on March 3, 4 and 5.
