and Joan Holmes. 1 received a very interesting letter from Arlu Smith and Harley Baughman this week. Harley, who was very ill during January, is now improving and getting out a little each day and says he is getting his sense of humor back again so that is sure good news. We all wish you well and hope to see you in the spring. Hurry and get well because your three other girl friends are looking forward to seeing you as we all miss you. Did you all remember what the first newspaper was called? Well, it was published back in 1892 and was called the North Liberty Herald but it only lasted four years. Then the North Liberty News took over in 1895 with Dell M. Woodward as publisher. Later Neil Decourdes took over and it was called North Liberty News and then later around 1963 it was called The Independent News with Bob Urbin as publisher and still is today. Loeva Kaser spent last weekend with her son, Craig, in Overland Park, Kansas. Our sympathy goes to the Muriel Homig family of Fish Lake, who passed away in St. Joseph Medical Center, after an illness, on Friday. Many of you will remember her, as she worked at the North Liberty Laundromat for many years and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Congratulations and best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jackson who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a family dinner Saturday at the Holiday Inn in Plymouth. They were married on February 22, 1945. Happy anni-
versary from all your many friends. Philip Patrick entertained Sunday in his new home recently built, for his mother Nell Patrick, of Walkerton, who was celebrating her birthday. Others present were Gene and Norma Patrick, Skeet and Carol Buettner and son Jim and daughter Jill Richey, all of LaPorte, Chris, Tammy, Brandon, Jamie Holderbaum, Gladys Sheneman, Judy Bums, of Plymouth and his daughter Jessie and daughter Karia, of Tyner. Nell received many lovely gifts after which all enjoyed birthday cake and ice cream. Word has been received by friends that George Bechtol, of Mansfield, Massachuttes, died on January 31 from complications of diabetes. Years ago he stayed here in North Liberty with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kaiser and also graduated from North Liberty and was a great basketball player. Do any of you remember him? Kirk and Joyce Liggett hosted a birthday party for their son, Adam, who was celebrating his 11th birthday on Sunday, February 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Kids Adventure Zone in South Bend on Grape Road. His friends who attended were Steve Snyder, Denny Graves, Steven Futa, Kyle Laßere, Nick Laßere and Christofer Shoue. The kids enjoyed lots of fun and exercise in the birthday room and then they all had lots more fun when they all got to stay overnight with Adam. Adams received a lot of presents. Happy birthday Adam from all your relatives and friends. The residents at Miller’s Merry Manor enjoyed the valentine party February 14 at 2:00 in the afternoon. Helen Gundlach entertained with sweetheart music on the organ. Virgil Gwin was celebrating his 93rd birthday on valentine’s day and the staff voted Cecil Lambert as king and Mildred Feuerstein as queen for the year. Refreshments of valentine cake and punch was served to all the residents and friends present. Aletha Croy, Roene Shoemaker, Iva Pommert, and Gladys attended the party with Julie Six, Maxine Six and Martha McCrosky. Our sympathy goes to the Nina Goon family, as she always attended the dinners at Pine Creek and turned 95 on August 28 and she was so active at that time. Shortly after, she fell and broke her him and then had to go to Miller’s Merry Manor in Warsaw where she passed away on Tuesday. She was buried on Thursday in Leesburg Cemetery in Warsaw. She is going to be greatly missed by all her relatives and friends as she was so friendly. Just received word from my sister-in-law, Mary Louise Sheneman, that my brother-in-law, Charles, is having many problems and needs all our prayers at this time. His daughter Nancy from lowa spent the past week with them. Patty and family, of Indianpolis, spent the weekend. So please pray for him. Please remember Flora Hough who was doing so well in her apartment. But on Wednesday she had something happen and had to be taken to Memorial Hospital where she is slowly improving. Joan Holmes spent several days last week in Crete, Illinois, caring for her grandson, Evan Williams, while his mother and dad were on a trip. Travis Holmes spent the weekend with Joan and Evan and FOR RENT NORTH LIBERTY COMMUNITY CENTER AIR CONDITIONED Renting For All Occasions 300 S. Main Street Phone 656-4134

they returned home on Sunday evening. Received word that Potato Creek will be conducting their 6th annual deer drive on Saturday, March 11. If interested in assisting, please meet at the park office at 9:00 a.m. This deer drive is to continue to study trends of the deer population in the park from year to year. Watch for the deer as you drive down State Road 4 all along the park area. I never saw so many all along the area as we drove home Sunday evening between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. Did you ever have to take cod liver oil in the winter as a preventive medicine? But it was nothing compared to a good healthy dose of the dreaded castor oil. Wasn’t that terrible tasting stuff? Please remember Jack Norris, the well driller, who is in St. Joseph Medical Center and needs our prayers.
