NORTH LIBERTY By Gladys Sheneman Just want you all to know that I wasn’t sick last week or that I went to California to see Dennis or I went to Florida as so many of you thought. I didn’t write because no one called me with news and since the weather was so cold and snowy, 1 sure didn’t go anywhere, therefore, I didn’t have any news. I hear some of you really tore that paper apart looking for my news. Will let you all know when I go on vacation. Cecil Schmeltz, of Plymouth, formerly of the Walkerton area celebrated his 80th birthday last Saturday, February 4, at the Moose in Plymouth. It was a stormy day but about 50 relatives and friends came to wish him a happy birthday. daughter, Amanda, of South Bend. Potato Creek State Park is back in business with all the snow and ice now. They say ice fishing is good now with six inches of ice. One person caught 27 blue gill the other day. Some have also been cross country skiing with five inches of snow on the trails. So its a fun place to go to have some winter fun if you bundle up good. Aletha Croy attended the dedication of her great-granddaugh-ter, Jessicanna Croy, daughter of Dennis and Linda Croy, at the Sunrise Chapel Church in Plymouth, on Sunday. She is three months old and has two brothers, Joshua and Calab. Also attending were Robert and Roxanne Croy and son, Doug, of Plymouth. Then everyone went back to the Dennis Croy home and enjoyed a delicious dinner. Later Aletha called on her brother, Everett and Doris Feece. Jill Richmond, of Louisville, Kentucky, spent the weekend with her parents, Charles and Joyce Richmond. Please remember Cecil Schmeltz who underwent surgery in St. Joseph Medical Center last Monday. in Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth. We were very good friends as we went to Tyner High School together and also to the Tyner U.B. Church 60 some years ago. Please remember Lois, his wife and family at this time. The food committee of the Mennonite Church had a valentine party for the couples of the church Monday evening. A delicious dinner, which was catered in, was served to about 75 people. The basement and tables were beautifully decorated for a valentine party. Contests were enjoyed by all taking part and it was a fun evening that will long be remmembered. The ladies all received a red, pink or white carnation. Guests were Bill and Mary Hartman and Gladys Sheneman. Phillip Lee, grandson of Harriett Lee, of Williams Street, returned home from Honolulu, Hawaii, after visiting his mother, M/Sgt. Donna Lee and his sister, Shannon Moser. While there he attended the NFL Gridiron Challenge at the Aloha Stadium. The weather was great, but he did get sunburned. Happy birthday, Cecile Moyer, who is a resident at Miller’s Merry Manor, in Walkerton, who celebrated her 92nd birthday on February 8. Rev. Tom Hostetler, of Bremen, came and took her out to eat at Welco and then later her two sons came, Robert and Helen Moyer, of Warsaw and Richard and Lois Moyer, of near Indianapolis. So best wishes from all your relatives and friends, Cecile. A truck driver who delivers groceries to Five Star ask how North Liberty got it’s name, so since I do have the history, I had to look it up. Liberty Township was suppose to be the first township to be settled in the county and since it is in the northwest portion of Liberty Township, they decided to call it North Liberty. Back in 1866 since it was twice its current size, it was divided and Lincoln Township was formed. Did you all know how North Liberty got its name? Sorry, I didn’t either until I looked it up. Do you know what the first newspaper was called? Guess. Will tell you next week. Many are still having the flu and bad colds. Did your mother ever use goose grease with a little turpentine, when she thought you were getting a bad cold? She would smear that icky stuff all over your chest and then the whole mess was topped with a wool cloth to hold the heat in. And if that didn’t work she would make a mustard plaster. Do you old timers remember these remedies? Yes, I remember and there was also the onion plaster and this was used to clear up congestion. Who would ever think of using these old-fash-ioned cured today? Goldie Skinner, who has been a resident in the Miller’s Merry Manor Nursing Home in Walkerton went to the home of her son, Herald Hostetler, on Monday where she will be staying and is improving. So please remember her. Many of you know Harley Baughman who is spending the winter in Sebring, Florida. Her funeral will be on Saturday at the Church of Christ and she will be buried in the Eastlawn Cemetery. So please remember these families in their sorrow.
