“played ill-fated captains in three airborne disaster dramas.” Such personal, often irreverent commentary distinguishes film historian Maltin’s cyclopedia from usual name-birth-credits listings in many film directories. From “Abbott and Costello” to “Zuniga, Daphne” (more “Melrose Place” than motion pictures), Maltin delightfully and informatively recaps the careers of some 2,000 names in moviemaking. This volume is complemented by Maltin’s annual (25th anniversary!) MOVIE AND VIDEO GUIDE 1995 (Signet: $7.99), a film buff’s “must have” compilation of 19,000 titles that keep audiences aware of earlier and current films and casts ... Briton David Thomson writes in the first edition (this is the third) of A BIOGRAPHICAL DICTIONARY OF FILM (Knopf: $25.00 paper) that his assemblage of movie bio-data was “Personal, Opinionated, and Obsessive.” The more than 1,000 sometimes elitist (no Abbott or Costello;! certainly no Zuniga), always excit-| ing cyclopedic entries attest to that! honesty.
