JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES (continued from Page 1) school will provide a new cafeteria and kitchen. The renovation of the existing building of 37,000 square feet will provide four new locker rooms on the lower level along with a lobby to the gym. The apron to the old stage will be removed from the gym area. The middle floor and the top floor of the existing building will be remodeled to provide a new science lab and classroom on each floor as well as small group team work areas. All classrooms in the existing building will be 900 square feet or larger. Total cost of the project including renovation, new construction, fixed equipment, loose equipment and purchase of land is estimated at $5,900,000. Improvements at the John Glenn High School outdoor physical education and athletic facilities will provide for a new eight lane all weather track, new baseball field, eight new tennis courts, new lighting of football field, outdoor public restrooms and concession stand, storage building, ADA compliant walkways to the facilities and new bleachers. The estimated cost of this project is $999,000. Roger Umbaugh, Umbaugh Associates, reviewed with the board the projected cost and funding plan for the projects. The total project cost is estimated at $9,260,000 which includes architectural fees, legal counsel, financing cost and funding for a new administration office for $350,000. The school will pay $1,490,000 of this cost from local funds and will sell bonds for $7,770,000 to fund the remainder cost of the project. The bonds will be paid out over a period of 17 years and the estimated increase in tax rate will be $1.03 per hundred of assessed evaluation. terms of the lease and the resolution executing a lease for the Urey Middle School project. b. Conduct Public Hearing on the Project i Mr. Rob Keck, president, open- ' ed the floor for public comment on the proposed project. Speaking in opposition to the project was Jeff Johnson and Nilas Miller, and speaking in favor of the project was Tom Fair and Tom Popovic. Letters of support for the project were presented to the school board from Gene Reese, Kenny Chapman, David Behr and Roger Holston. After giving ample opportunity for those in attendance to make comment on the project, President Keck concluded the public hearing on the project. c. School Board Member Comment All school board members made comments supporting the renovation and addition to Urey Middle School, improvements to the John Glenn High School outdoor physical education and athletic facilities and for a new administration building. They cited the plan met the educational needs of the students, was fair to the taxpayers, represented a compromise solution to a problem and a need to complete this project so the board can devote their attention to other needs of the school corporation. d. Consider Adoption of the Resolution A motion was made by Robert Schaeffer, seconded by Ben Smith, to adopt the resolution authorizing the execution of a lease relating to the Urey Middle School project with the correction being made on the first page by striking out ‘‘TriCounty News” and inserting ‘‘Walkerton Independent-News.” The motion was approved by a seven to zero vote. A copy of the resolution is on file with the board minutes. NEXT MEETING DATE The school board will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on February 7, 1995 at John Glenn High School.
