ARTHUR A. FORD Arthur A. Ford, 72, of 8209 Tippecanoe Ave., (Koontz Lake) Walkerton, died at 9:47 a.m. Monday in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born July 12, 1922, in Bryant, IN and had lived in LaPorte area for 33 years. On June 17, 1945, in Pennville, Indiana, he married Marjorie E. Cash, who died April 2, 1983. Mr. Ford retired in 1978 as a sixth-grade teacher from Washington Elementary School where he also was a coach. Surviving are three sons, Virgil of Yorktown, Indiana, Chuck of Carmel, Indiana, and Tim of LaPorte; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruby Windmiller of Decatur, Indiana. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery, LaPorte. Friends may call from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and until services Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Koontz Lake Missionary Church. ELLEN M. LEHMAN Ellen M. Lehman, 85, of Miller’s Merry Manor, died at 1:12 a.m. Saturday, January 14, in the nursing home after an illness. She was born April 12, 1909, in Eagle, Michigan, and lived in Walkerton since 1945. On August 12,1945, in Michigan, she married Forrest G. Lehman, who died in 1986. Mrs. Lehman had been an elementary school teacher at Polk-Lincoln-Johnson and John Glenn school, retiring in May of 1971. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. She was a member of Teegarden United Methodist Church and Retired Teachers Association. Services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson Funeral Home. Burial was in the Center-Polk Cemetery, west of LaPaz. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Genevieve and Charles are deceased) to Charles and Catherine Monesmith Compton. Her entire school days were spent in Bourbon, graduating from there in 1933. During the summers, she, along with other Bourbon youths worked in the onion fields for area farmers, 10 cents an hour and later increased to 15 cents. She says it was hard work however they had alot of fun too. After graduation, Mrs. Fouts was employed as a bookkeeper at Berkeypile’s Chevrolet Garage in Bourbon; she worked from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with an hour off for lunch six days per week at $4.00 per week. She would also go back to the office on Saturday night to balance the cash register. Her salary was later increased to $6.00 per week. In 1935, at the Bourbon home of her parents, she married Gell Fouts. Mr. and Mrs. Fouts lived in Bourbon for two years and then moved to a farm in Polk Township, east of Walkerton where they presently reside. Mrs. Fouts still does gardening and canning; and has made many scrapbooks containing items of interest in the Marshall County area through the years. Mrs. Fouts has another daughter, Mrs. Roger (Carolyn) Kelly, LaPaz, three grandchildren, Ms. Jane Kelly, South Bend, Donald McCan and Michael F. Kelly of Plymouth; and two great grandsons, Matthew and Sean McCan. UREY MIDDLE SCHOOL CHESS NEWS Students from Urey Middle School participated in the individj ual regional chess tournament in Michigan City on Saturday, January 14. Players competed in five rounds of chess along with 41 other students from Northern Indiana. Urey’s top player for the day was I Matt Gineris with 4 wins. Matt qualified for the state tournament, which will be held in Terre Haute later this month. Also competing, with 3 wins, were Matt Alspaugh (Urey), Kevin Bullock (Urey), Casey Butler (Urey) and Brandon Liggett (JGHS), with 2Vi wins was Tom Stafford (Urey) and with 2 wins was Jamie Dolph (Urey). The chess team is coached by teacher Lisa Cox.
