Household Help by John Amantea
Q. I own a four-bedroom, bilevel home including a finished basement. I plan on painting several of these rooms but not until I resolve a few problems. W ith three kids running around, Ihc walls and ceilings have taken a beating over the years. Some of the walls have small holes, cracks and even bad dry wall joints. The ceilings arc so bad, they resemble road maps. Can you suggest some easy procedures to remedy these problems? A You should lx-gin your chore with the ceilings If there are any holes or large cracks, use a good commercial spackling compound to fill them Allow all patchwork ade quale time to dry because there is usually some shrinkage As far as your checked, or as you describe it, road map, ceilings arc concerned, (here is ho|X‘ The Ik*sl camouflage is to cover them with sand paint or a textured compound The sand paint can lx* purchased al any paint or decorating store and is simple to apply With just a paint pan and a fluffy roller, you are ready to begin The textured compound is usually applied with a large, porous sponge and can Ise quite tiresome and messy Whichever method you choose, you will no longer have a “road map" on your ceilings The other part of your job is to prepare your walls, only if they are repairable and not in need of new dry wall As with the ceilings, use spackle for holes, cracks and other irregularities that you might see Again, allow proper time for curing or drying and sand any rough SUt faces lightly A bad dry wall joint can consist of either the nails |x>pping outward, to common settling and/or slight wall movement Whatever the case, you will have to Ix’gin by scraping off the old joint compound with the sharp edge of a putty knife The old material should flake off easily and you will also have to remove (he existing dry wall (ape Be careful when removing the old tape Ix-cause you might tear off paper from the dry wall board itself •NOTE: A word to the w ise when painting poorly surfaced walls is to use a flat or low sheen, dark colored paint Send your Household Help questions (o John Amantea, King Features Weekly Serv ice, 235 East 45th Street, New York.
