JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES December 19, 1994 Regular A Executive Sexton CALL TO ORDJER AND ROLL CALL TLhe Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on December 19, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present with Mr. Keck arriving at 8:00 p.m. The School Board along with the superintendent and approximately eight observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The School Board minutes for the regular session on December 6, 1994 were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS 2,407 through 2.558 A motion was made by Ben Smith, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve claims numbered 2,407 through 2,558. The motion was approved bv a six to zero vote. PATRON RESPONSE Jeff Johnson spoke to the Board about the failure of the Board to address overcrowding conditions at the elementary schools with the current middle school building project. A copy of his written comments are on file with the Board minutes. RECOGNITIONS 1. North Liberty Elementary and Walkerton Elementary School Spell Bowl Teams The School Board recognized the Walkerton Elementary Spell Bowl Team and coach Mrs. Jan Hayes for their Cass 111 Division Championship and the North Liberty Elementary Team and coach Mr. Tim Davis for their runner-up finish in Cass 111 Division. Students on the Walkerton Elementary Spell Bowl Team are Tony Shepherd, Sarah Sokol, Molly Pletcher, Emily Batman, Andrea Ottinger, Lisa Daube, Betsy Hummel and Caudia Bell. Members of the North
Liberty Elementary Spell Bowl Team are Sarah Craft, Amy Carlson, Elizabeth Browne, Brandi Davis, Nicole Radandt, Ashley Horvath. Jennifer Kemble and Brandi Brodzinski. Mr. Dick Reese, principal of Urey Middle School, commended on the Urey students for their donation of over 700 food items to the Food Pantry in Walkerton. The food drive was sponsored by the student council and Mrs. Beville, sponsor. The Urey Middle School choir and band performed their annual Christmas program on Monday, December before a “standing room only" audience at the John Glenn High School auditorium. The band and choir will tour Miller’s Merry Manor and both elementaries on Wednesday, December 21. Mr. Reese thanked Ray & Kenny’s Super Valu for their $117.76 donation from the Educational Advantage program. Mrs. Marilyn Lightfoot, principal at Walkerton Elementary School, announced that Chad Haag was honored by AM General for a winning poster. Chad was delivered to school in a Hummer! Mrs. Lightfoot recognized the community for “adopting’’ 144 students for Christmas, homeschool coordinator Diane Vermillion for a very postitve outlook for 100 home visits, the sixth grade basketball team and coach Gordon Hartsell for winning the sixth grade tourney, the fifth grade basketball team and coach John Huffman who in their final tourney game lost in overtime by one point. A donation to WES in the amount of $605.18 was received from Ray & Kenny's Educational Advantage program. Mr. Brent Kaufman, principal at North Liberty Elementary School, reported that the fifth grade basketball B-team won a first place trophy at the Triton Tourney. The fifth grade basketball A-team lost to WES by two points at the tourney. This ended a 7-0 winning streak. Santa was thanked for visiting the kindergarten class. Mr. Ludwig made the North Pole contact for NLES. The sixth grade participated in project “Adopt a Family” by taking donations. Krogers, Kabelins and others gave discounts and donated items. Canned foods were collected and given to the local Salvation Army. Channel 22 came to the school and interviewed students and sponsor, Mr. Davis, concerning the project.
