COUGARS DEFEAT FALCONS 02-53 FRIDAY NIGHT The John Glenn Falcons opened their home basketball season Friday night and found a nine game home floor winning streak being broken by the visiting New Prairie Cougars. This was the second Northern State Conference game for the Falcons, who slipped to 12-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The game found two teams trying to find what they could do in the first half. Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the first 16 mintues. For the Falcons, Brian Lyle carried the load early, getting nine of the Falcons 11 first quarter points as the two teams were tied at 11 all after one quarter of play. Lyle continued hot in the second stanza, getting assist from Guseilla as they each tossed in seven points in this period, all but one of the Falcons second quarter points. For the visiting Cougars, Horvath tossed in five second quarter baskets to go with one in the first period and the visitors led 30-26 at the main intermission with Horvath having 12 and Lyle totaling 16 of Glenn’s 26. The Cougars started to open it up a little in the second half. They rode an 11 point effort by Phillips in this quarter to pull to a 47-38 lead. For the Falcons, it was still mainly Lyle, as he added seven more to his total giving him 23 through three. However, it was not going to be the Falcons night as the Cougars coasted on to the 62-53 final score in this one. For the game, the Falcons hit 21 of 50 shots for 42 percent, getting four of 12 from three point range. The Cougars hit a fine 27 of 51 for 53 percent, but also only connected twice from three points range in 10 tries, leaving them a fine 25 of 41 from two point range. Good shooting combined with a decent shot selection made the difference. For the winners Phillips ended with 18 points and Horvath 16. Lyle took game honors with 23, and Guseilla 25 Kwh Os ProtessiOMl & Penontl Stmce • UPHOLSTERY . • CARPETING | « (219) 586-2745 or (219) 324-4942 CaU 6 00 a m. - 12:00 pm

C. Coach Scott Hostetler’s John Glenn Lady Falcons started quickly and finished strong to soundly defeat a good South Central squad 49-35 in a non-conference basketball fray at Union Mills Monday night. The win snapped a six game domination of the Satellites over the Falcons and improved the locals overall record to 5-5 while dropping South Central to 5-3 on the year. Glenn came out smoking in the first quarter as senior forward Tracy Legge’s 10 points fueled a 21 point outburst by the Falcons in the first eight minutes while holding the usually high scoring hosts to just eight points. The Falcons cooled down considerably in the second stanza mustering only two field goals but still managed to cling to a 25-21 advantage at the intermission. Another poor shooting performance in the third period produced just one field goal and three free throws for the black clad JOHNSON INS. AGENCY DON R. Falcons. Only a strong defensive effort kept the winners on top at the third stop, 30-27. But then the Falcons erupted for 19 big points in the final eight minutes while holding the listless Satellites to eight markers to win going away. Seniors Legge and Renee Fisher combined for 15 of the 19 fourth quarter points. Besides scoring 20 points to take game scoring honors for the visitors, Legge pulled down nine boards. South Central’s outstanding senior Mary Goodwin was held to 11 points on the night to pace her team. The Falcons shot at a 70 percent clip at the charity stripe canning 14 of 20 attempts for the night while the home team could manage only five of 11 tries. Coach Hostetler was very pleased with his team's overall effort which allows his team a chance to go into the Christmas break with a winning record for the first time in many years subject to the results of the game with winless New Prairie this week.
