THE VETERAN’S CORNER ^Veterans Petition For Local Medical Cliak” By BID Flaogher “The veterans in this area are the most underserved in the whole country,” says Betty Lou Carpenter, a South Bend resident who served in the Navy Medical Corps during World War 11. Harry Bailey, the Service Officer of St. Joseph County, concurs. "The only ones worse off live out west and are 100 miles from nowhere," he says. Over 60,000 veterans live within the third congressional district of Indiana and nearby Michigan, and must travel to Fort Wayne, Marian, or Indianapolis in order to get medical treatment at a vveteran clinic. Bailey brought up the need for a local outpatient clinic at the veteran’s advisory committee meeting held by Congressman Tim Roemer (D-South Bend) in February. "It mushroomed from there,” Bailey says. Johnathan Hawkes, head of the V.A. Hospital in Ft. Wayne advised Carpenter to write a petition to start a Veteran’s Mecical Clinic in St. Joseph County, which she did three months ago. "The response has been very good’, Bailey says. "We don’t have a goal, but we want as many as we can get. Politicians learn to count before they learn to talk, it seems.” Supporters include South Bend Mayor Joseph Kernan and commissioner Richard Jasinski as well as member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts. For now a van purchased two years ago by the V.A. runs as many as five vets per day to the clinics in Fort Wayne, or Indianap-

olis. The van has logged over 70,000 miles, says Bailey, and when it reaches 100,000, it will be taken out of service. Over a third of all veterans in St. Joseph County are age 65 or over. Many do not drive, and cannot afford the bus ride and what often amounts to a two-day trip for simple treatments, Bailey adds. Making the trip for emergency cases is not out of the question. Backers of the proposed facility say it could be located at a hospital; eliminating need for construction of a new building. Also, it could fulfill many needs by operating as few as three to four days a month. "It’s entirely up to what the V.A. wants to do,” says Bailey, adding that the V.A. "does have money.” AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY SWEEPSTAKES RAFFLE WINNERS The American Legion Auxiliary
