The Board of School Trustees reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids. Board of School Trustees JOHN GLENN SCHOOL CORPORATION R. W. Schaeffer, Secretary THE LEGION CORNER “The American Legion At 75” Still Active And Growing! Some may think The American Legion is a relic of the past ... a dying, old veterans organization. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact the Legion is the largest and fastest-growing wartime vetereans group, with more than 3.1 million members. The organization has enjoyed an eight year span of steady growth, and is approaching the all-time high in membership reached shortly after World War D. Since Operation Desert Storm, an entire new generation of wartime veterans has become eligible to join The American Legion . . . the nearly 2.2 million service men and women who served on active duty during the Persian Gulf War Many of them were already eligible due to prior active service during Grenada, Panama, and Lebanon. During the past several years, the Legion has used modern computer technology in its recruitment efforts, especially to focus on the ( Vietnam-era veteran group, whose ; members are growing older and becoming more “mainstream”. They । realize the Legion's concerns i match theirs, and consequently are now more prone to join a veterans group which addresses their needs. । Nearly 750,000 Vietnam-era veterf ans now belong to The American Legion. The Legion’s member re- । tention rate is an extremely high 88 percent. The surge of patriotism which t emerged and flourished during । and since the Gulf War is not the , only reason veterans are interested ' in joining an organization like the Legion. Not only is the Legion the ’ largest ... it is the most active veterans organization. Soon after , Dessert Shield began with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, the । Legion took bold new steps to fulfill „ its primary mission: to help veterans and their families. An imaginative program called The Family Support Network of The American Legion was developed. It was designed as an on- , going, no-cost program to link families of Desert Shield/Desert Storm personnel with the Legiont naires in the organization’s more ‘ than 15,000 posts across the nation, who provided help to those left st home due to military separation. ’ The Family Support Network continues in existence to assist Persian Gulf veterans as they return to civilian life, particularly with em- ’ ployment.
