RARE TYPE OF POTTERY To slay in business, a firm must keep up with the fashions and needs of the day. Some of the pottery factories of England have remained in business for over 150 years because they kept changing their wares. One of the famous potteries, makers of Royal Doulton, was started in 1815 by John Doulton. His pottery made salt-glazed wares, figural jugs and bottles, plumbing parts, stonewares and many artistic pieces. One of the rarest types of pottery made by Doulton was known as Marqueterie Ware, invented in 1886 by William Rix. The name was inspired by its slight resemblance to the inlaid wooden designs on furniture called marquetry. The pottery was made of many different colors of clay. Thin layers of different colors were compressed into a multicolor block, then a slice was cut off to be made into a vase or bowl There were many challenges Different types of clay shrink at different rates, so a piece could crack when it was fired If the potter worked the clay too long, the colors blended and the attractive marbleized look disappeared Finished pieces are very light in weight and will chip Marqueterie was made in limited quantities until 1906 Pieces are marked with a special mark that includes the words “Doulton & Rix’s patent, Marqueterie." * * * Q. My glass pitcher seems to commemorate the Revolutionary War. On one side is a face that appears to be Teddy Roosevelt; on the other side is a ship, cannon* balls, crossed flags and rifles. The top edge has a rope design. My aunt said she bought it years ago and it was filled with coffee. Can you comment on this?

A Use common sense when you research an antique Why would Teddy Roosevelt, president of the United States from 1901 to 1909, be on a pitcher about the Revolutionary War? The man pictured is Adm. George Dewey and the ship is the Olympia from a battle in the Spanish-American War in 1898. Your pitcher is one of twodifferent designs of pressed glass pitchers made to honor Dewey at the end of the war. It was sold to the admiring public in 1899. It may have been used as a premium by a coffee company, and that is why your aunt remembers it came with coffee inside. The pitcher sells for about $95 today. * * ★ Make money from your home. TIMESAVER — I discovered something I think may benefit a lot of people. I work, do aerobics and church work, and have four children, two of whom are still at home. One evening I decided to cook everything I could find. My family was so excited over the variety that I decided to do this every week. I cook everything and keep it all in the fridge. We fix our own plates and heat them in the microwave for a few minutes. The kitchen is busy only a couple of hours one day a week. It takes the worry out of meal planning, and we can eat as soon as we set the table. I love it! I wish I had done this years ago. It sure would have saved a lot of tempers and aggravation through the years. Gerri H , Elizabethtown, Ky. BREAD BOX — My solution to
the pine bread box odor is to use the box to store tea and coffee The box I have is so attractive and decorative, it would have been disappointing to retire it from the kitchen counter It also limits the clutter of tea boxes and coffee jars, yet keeps these oftused items handy. Jill G., Harrisonburg, Va. FAST FIX — While at work recently, I lost the back of my earrings for about the hundredth time To temporarily fix the problem, I simply removed an eraser from a pencil and used it instead Kim O , Athens, Texas PARTY ENHANCER - I made confetti for a New Year’s Eve party by using adding machine tape I used my three-hole punch and felt pretty good recycling something that could have been tossed in the garbage However, I ran out of the tape before I had enough confetti I looked around the house to see what else I could find, when what did 1 spy but the whole wall of Christmas cards that were to be thrown out soon I ended up with a whole bowl full of colorful confetti. Children as young as 3 years old can understand the concept of exchanging money for something they want. But most kids are not ready to learn how money is earned, saved, and spent until they reach age 6. Teach your child that money is not limitless by taking them grocery shopping each week. Tell your child that you have a limited amount of money for groceries. Let him or her keep track of how much money you spend, and inform you when you reach your limit. This way, your child will understand spending limits

and begin to develop their own ideas for saving money. Allowances can teach children how to manage their own money. Financial experts agree that children should determine how to spend their allowance. The best time to start giving a weekly allowance is around the age of 6 You also should give your child advice on how to spend or save their money. Do not offer your kids extra money during the week. Children learn the importance of money management skills by experiencing first-hand the consequences of not spending their money wisely. Show your child how to save money by helping them start a savings account. When your kids are about 7 or 8 years old, take some of their money out of their piggy bank and deposit it into their own savings account. Encourage your kids to make regular deposits. Take them to the bank to help them feel as if they’re actively managing their own financial affairs. You may want to recommend that your children save money in their bank accounts for some special purchases, such as a new bicycle, stereo equipment, or other big-ticket items. This idea teaches kids to set financial goals and develop the discipline necessary to meet those goals. Be sure to review their bank statement with them, and explain how money can grow by earning interest. Sooner or later, most children realize that they can earn money just by letting their savings sit in the bank. As your children get older, introduce them to other investment vehicles. Give your children savings bonds or stock in a company, such as a fast-food chain or toy manufacturer. This will help them understand basic investing concepts. ©1994 by King Faatuiw Synd.

It is certainly not necessary to memorize tables of probabilities to be a good card player. In most deals the right percentage play is obvious, and all that is required is a commonsense approach In today’s deal, declarer ran counter to probabilities and cost himself a game He won the club lead in dummy, played a trump and lost the queen to the king West returned a club, ruffed by South, but since he had no further entries to dummy for another trump lead, he had to lose two more trump tricks and go down one. Declarer would have made the contract had he played the nine of trumps instead of the queen at trick two, in which case he would have lost two trump tricks instead of three In determining whether the nine or the queen is the better play, the simplest approach is to ignore all

trump divisions where it makes no difference whether the queen or nine is played. For example, if West has the A-K-10, declarer's play does not matter, since he is destined to fail whatever he does If the trumps are divided 2-2, South’s play is likewise immaterial All he loses is two trump tricks, whatever he does. A 4-0 trump division is also irrelevant because declarer is bound to fail in that case Actually, the only case that matters is a 3-1 division with West holding the singleton, which can be the ace, king or ten Because there is a greater chance — 2 to 1, to be exact — that West's singleton is the ace or king rather than the ten, the percentage play is the nine. In the actual deal, the percentage play wins.
