THIS WEEK, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end The media have done a laudable job throughout October in making millions of women aware of the need for self-examination and mammograms so that any cancer that may be present is found and treated early. Leslie Charleson, an intelligent, gifted actor who plays Dr Monica Quartermame on the daytime series, “General Hospital," has been in volved in a story in which her character discovers she has breast cancer and undergoes a mastectomy The plot currently deals with her postoperative reaction to her changed world, including the challenge to her self-esteem, and the stresses on her personal and professional relation ships, and the realities of post-surgi cal chemotherapy “Our series reaches an extraordinary number of women viewers.” Charleson said “If the story per suaded just one woman out of all those millions who watch us to save her life by doing regular self-ex-aminations and having regularly scheduled mammograms, that, alone, would have been worth the effort “I did a lot of reading and I asked

a lot of questions,” Charleson said "I knew the writers would be thorough in their research, but there were things I wanted to find out for myself 1 learned many people think (hey know a lot about breast cancer (but) none of us knows as much as we should There are still many gaps in our knowledge, although researchers are finding more answers and getting closer to a cure and, perhaps a vaccine Besides emphasizing the need for self-examination and mammograms, Charleson feels, “Dealing with Monica's post-surgical exjx-riences was also important We didn't want anyone to think it all ends happily with the surgery. This person must be helped to accept that she is no less a woman for losing one or both breasts," Charleson said, noting that our culture still equates feminine desirability with breast size Charleson is pleased that the writers have included Monica's husband, family and friends in her psychological and physical recuperation process “Men whose loved ones go through this experience also need to be helped to learn how to deal with what's hap pened to these women "

Q. I have a problem with chairs that have loose joints and wigglv movements. Is there away to make the joints tight without taking the whole chair apart? I have something called “Chair LOK” but I’ve never used it since the directions call for taking the joints apart first. A This may sound like a simple solution, but did you tighten any screws that run through the legs and into the chair itsdP Be careful not to overly tighten these screws because they can easily get stripped into the soft wood. Another proven method to use consists of using small blocks of wood Cut these pieces of wood to match the exact size of the top of the chair leg If your chair legs happen to be circular m shape at the top, place the wood on the inside of the leg The next step is to pre-drill at least two small holes into the blocks of wood if you don't already have factory-in-stalled screws Try to install long, counter-sunk screws that will go at least through half the width of your wood pieces Another important thing to do is to slightly counter sink the exterior side of the chair leg before you install the long screws This will prevent the screws from protruding out on the surface of the legs Finally, fill the counter-sunk hole with a wood tiller product Be sure to try to match the wood tiller product to your particular type of wood The filler should be applied sparingly so that you would have little or no sanding to do after the product dries and cures You may have to also purchase a small can of wood stain if the wood-filled holes are very obvious or aesthetically unappealing An ordinary cotton swab will suffice to apply (he stain In reference to your question about a product called Chair Lok, in my humble opinion, the blocks of wood are more supportive and sturdier The product you mentioned is a strong adhesive and is merely applied between the chair leg and the underside of the chair seat itself Finally, you can either remove one joint or all at a time to complete (he repair Send Household Help questions to John Amantea, King Features Weekly Service, 235 East 45th Street, New York, N.Y. 10017.
