REPORTS I. Superintendent's Report a. 1994-95 Official Enrollment Information The superintendent reported that enrollment increased by 54.5 students over 1993. Walkerton Elementary enrollment is 561, North Liberty 403, Urey Middle School 312, John Glenn High School 506, for a total of 1,814 students enrolled in John Glenn School Corporation. b. Gateway Testing Beginning in the 1995-96 school year, Indiana students will participate in a new comprehensive statewide assessment system in mathematcs and English/language arts. This new comprehensive assessment system will take the place of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP). The new comprehensive assessment system includes some testing similar to ISTEP. but it contains several components that are focused to help teachers improve their assessment skills and teaching strategies. A second important difference, the new test will measure student achievement relative to the schools that have been defined by the Indiana Educators along with representatives of business and labor communities to be essential for all students' success in life. that all K-12 assessments will look differently from ISTEP. Rather than being comprised conclusively of multiple choice items, the assessments will combine multiple choice items with open-ended "constructed-response” items and performance tasks require students to analyze and synthesize information to solve complex problems. The test will be administered in grades three, four, eight, ten and twelve. The grade 10 assessment is an exit exam and students mnust pass this test in order to receive a diploma. Students failing to pass the test will receive remediation and opportunities to retake the test. c. Middle School Update The superintendent updated Board members on a recent visit with Mr. Skeens where the preliminary plans for renovation of Urey Middle School were presented. in formed the Board on the need to form a new building corporation. and reported that Kari Vilamaa, architect, would present updated plans for the renovation of Urey Middle School and preliminary plans for John Glenn High School improvements to the athletic and physical education facilities at the next Board meeting. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on October 18. 1994 at John Glenn High School. Peter is a 1990 graduate of John Glenn High School and will graduate in December from Valparaiso University with a degree in Communications. He is employed by Pugsley Electric. A summer wedding is being planned for July 29,1995. ENGAGED KU - a Helen and Emiel Coddens, of North Liberty, announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen Diane Coddens, to Kenneth Steven Plencner. The future bridegroom is the son of Pat and Dan Plencner. of South Bend. A November 19, 1994 wedding is planned. Parent-Senior Recognition Night At J.G. October 14 John Glenn High School will be holding Parent/Senior Recognition Night on Friday, October 14. This is at the last home football game against Bremen starting at 7:30 p.m. We will be recognizing all senior boys and girls who have participated in football, cross country, tennis. volleyball, cheerleading. Crimson Illusion, and the marching band, along with their parents.
