west comer of State Road 23 and Tyler Road. Nellie married Cloyd Smith May 3, 1916, in Walkerton. Mr. Smith died February 1976. They had three children, Ralph L., who died December 1970, Vada Ellen Smith Stull and Iva Eileen Smith Gark. She has seven grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren. Nellie was the first cook for the hot lunch program in the Walkerton school. This was started by the P.T.A. in the Home Ec room, then moved to the basement in the 1930'5. She did wall papering for hire, worked along with her son buying and selling poultry. Sometimes the family would dress (clean) as many as 200 chickens to be sold for the weekend. This was done all by hand using a copper kettle to scald the poultry. She baked bread and peddled the Town and Koontz Lake. She would buy 50 pound bags of flour from the elevator, selling pan rolls or a loaf of bread for 10 and 15 cents. In later years she clerked in several grocery stores, did sewing and mending for people in town. Nellie would tackle almost any job. She cut door ways, built porches and cabinets, some were not real professional looking, but served the purpose. She used to accompany local doctors to the

homes to assist in the delivery of babies. She had roomers, since she lived at 706 Ohio Street in an eight room house. During World War II there were as many as 13 people who called this home, even the front porch was made into a bedroom. Nellie would babysit for family and friends, always willing to give a helping hand. She loved to play cards and for years played at the old Mount Vernon School south of town. One of the most important holidays was the 4th of July when the Hahn family had a picnic. This was great since we live next to the park. When the K-Mart stores were built, a trip to one of the stores was a great place to go. She called them the "K-Market” and on the way back to Walkerton she would start a list of what she wanted to buy on the next trip. Mrs. Smith is the oldest member of the Walkerton United Methodist Church, being a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church when the two churches merged. She was a charter member of the Lincoln Twp. Home Demonstration Gub. She has been a resident of the Nursing Home.since August, 1984.
