D.N.R. Quarantines Sale Os Dogwoods In State This Fall The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced that it will adopt and enforce a limited quarantine on the sale and distribution of flowring dogwoods (Cornus florida) and kousa dogwoods (Cornus kousa) for the fall of 1994. The 90-day action, levied by the DNR Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology, will prevent further sale and introduction of dogwoods infected with dogwood anthracnose into Indiana in fall 1994. The quarantine applies to all wholesale and retail outlets of nursery stock in the state. The order includes the Pacific dogwood (Cornus nuttallii), which is not usually sold in Indiana, since that species also is known to be susceptible to dogwood anthracnose. Dr. Robert Waltz, state ento- * mologist, stated that the action is necessary because Indiana saw a surge in the disease this year. Conditions in the spring of 1994 favored rapid increases in dogwood anthracnose, causing infection of many dogwoods. Other states shipping flqwering dogwood trees into Indiana in 1994 generallylacked adequate certification procedures to prevent introduction of the disease into Indiana. Specialists at the DNR continue to work to prevent spread of the disease. “Having discussed the matter with several state inspecting authorities, it seems prudent to protect Indiana's resources through this limited quarantine.

By spring of 1995, I believe most states will have some improved inspection measures in place, and dogwoods should again be made generally available," reported Dr. Waltz. “Although direct loss of the plant is monetarily and aesthetically disturbing, these real losses are compounded when one realizes the damage the disease can do if it spreads to other more established plants in the landscape, or if it's introduced to a natural forest stand," he added. Dogwood anthracnose, cause by the fungal pathogen Discula destructiva, kills flowering dogwood trees in native forest areas. The disease can also kill susceptible dogwoods in landscaping plantings when the diseased plants have been purchased and planted in residential areas. The disease, not yet widespread in Indiana, is limited to a few small areas in the northern counties. In spring 1994, large numbers of dogwoods infected with the dogwood anthracnose were shipped and distributed throughout Indiana. The full consequence of this introduction may not be known for several years. Homeowners need not necessarily become alarmed if they notice leaf spots on dogwoods, according to DNR plant pathology supervisor Tina McCay-Buis. “Many different kinds of spots can be found on dogwood trees, especially late in the season," she said. “The fungus which causes dogwood anthrocnose can only be reliably identified in a laboratory by trained personnel." Symptoms include large leaf spots with tan centers and purple
margins with tiny fruiting bodies (black spots) on the underside; leaves that die and remain attached on the branch; “suckers,” or sprouts that develop along the main branches or trunk; and twig cankers (discolored sunken areas). If you suspect your tree is diseased, contact your local County Extension Service. That office will provide a form which should be forwarded, along with leaf samples, to the Purdue Univerwsity Plant Pest Diagnostic Clinic in West Lafayette for confirmation of the disease. Q. I recently read that on “Models Inc.” they’re going to bring back a character who died. I would guess that has to be the model named Terri. What I’d like to know- is, how will they do it? Please don’t tell me that her death (she was pushed from a balcony) will be something like Bobby Ewing (Patrick Duffy) returning to “Dallas" by having his wife dream that he’d been aw ay. I don’t think I could stand it if it happens that way. Dina M. A. As this is being written, the return has occurred, and it wasn't as pan of a dream sequence, either. (At least, not so far) Stephanie Romanov, who played the ill-fated Terri who was killed on the first episode, was supposed to be a one-time-only guest star But everyone, including producer Aaron Spelling, was so impressed by the lovely model-turned-actor, they tried to figure away to bang her back Meanwhile, Spelling arranged for her to guest star on another one of his shows, “Burke's Law." Finally, the writers came up with the way to get Stephanie back onto “Models Inc." by having her tum up as Terri’s look-alike, Monique, whom she describes as “a catalyst who brings the other characters together." P S. Watch for Stephanie, as Monique, to display her musical talents when the character does a tum as a lounge singer in upcoming episodes Q. I understand Rob Morrow, who stars on “Northern Exposure,” wrote a book about the show. Is it one of those exposes? Does he plan to leave the show, and is that why the book will be getting published soon? Barry O. A Morrow, who plays Dr Joel Fleishman on the senes, didn’t wnte an expose, as such But he did do a lot of exposing —of film, that is The book, called "Northern Exposure, Photography by Rob Morrow," is filled with wonderful pliotographs

Rob has taken of castmales, crew, locations, etc Morrow started to study photography well before he became an actor His work in this book, which is published by Hyper ion, shows his warm, personal feelings for his camera’s subjects Q. I’m so happy that Nickelodeon is running “I Drcam of Jeannie” now in their lineup. 1 always thought that Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman made a cute couple. Were they really as close as they appeared in the series, or was that just good acting? Patty J. ■ w ~ ® jiag A While the two are very talented actors, they did indeed get along very well and remain friends to this day. In fact, as you may well remember, Barbara did some guesting on Larry's series, “Dallas," in the 1980 s. Q. I make it a point to watch Jerry Lewis’ MDA telethon every Labor Day and I was wondering something. What’s the story behind all the recent controversy about this? I understand that some of the people stricken with Muscular Dystrophy resent this event. Why is that so when it raises so much money to fight the disease? Tony H. A From what I've heard, these folks feel that they’re put up on the show as objects of pity and they don't like it Personally, I think that's just ridiculous If you were to ask them. 1. One Club. Despite your 16 points and balanced distribution, which suggest opening one notrump, it is better to start with a suit bid As usual, with equal length in clubs and spades, you choose the lower suit in order to conserve bidding space Basically, the notrump bid is rejected because you have two unguarded suits 2. One spade. You're sure of game, but that doesn't mean you should bid two spades to show it A jump shift would indicate a probable slam, and your values are simply not good enough for that Change a heart into a spade and you'd then have an acceptable two spade bid One spade is 100 percent forcing and you plan to bid strongly later on. 3. Double. This indicates opening bid values and support for spades and clubs, the two unbid suits It would be wrong to bid one spade, which would imply greater spade length and less in high cards 4. Redouble. This shows 10 or more points You plan either to get to game or to double the opponents for penalty 5. Four dubs. A small slam is already certain, since partner's jump-shift shows at least 19 points, including high cards and distribution You hope to arrive at grand slam Four clubs is a waiting bid which gives partner a chance to further describe the nature of his jumpshift Your next move will depend on what he does over four clubs. 6. Pass. The value of a hand changes as the bidding progresses. Before the bidding started, you had a good chance of finding partner with spade or club support, but that hope is now largely dissipated Your best strategy now is to pass and hope the opponents climb too high. ■ Y X X W I V I Al ASK EVELYN that most of them got some sort of help from the Muscular Dystrophy Association over the years, thanks to Jerry. I, myself, know two kids who wouldn't have wheelchairs if it weren't for the MDA I also knew a little boy who died from the disease when he was only 11 years old Watching Jerry tirelessly give of himself year after year, 1 can only applaud what he's doing As for the detractors, I believe Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge said it best: “Bah, humbug’“ Q. Evelyn, 1 have to tell you that you were practically a lifesaver about two years ago when you answered a question for me about the late Bud Abbott. None of my friends believed me until you backed me up in your column. Now I’d like to ask you if it’s true the comedian, Stan Laurel, was actually born in New Jersey and not in England as everyone suspected. Thanks a lot. Dave T. A. I wish you had told me what it was you asked, and w hat I said about Bud Abbott. As for Stan Laurel, sorry, we can’t even place him on the Channel island of Jersey, let alone New Jersey Stan was, indeed, bom in England, C 1994 by Kin< Fe»tur»« Synd
