Household Help by John Amantca

Q. I recently read your Household Help column in our weekly newspaper and would appreciate your advice. I would like to know if there is a method to clean up my hardwood oak flooring. In August, 1993, we purchased an older home built in 1954 and would like some tips from you. If at all possible, I would like to avoid sanding because of the mess and expense involved. Can you give me some guidelines on sprucing up my floor? A As I’ve mentioned in several of my columns, there is nothing like a beautifully waxed, hardwood floor. However, as in your case, it is only possible if you sand that floor. The actual cost is low and even then, you can shop around for a reasonable rental center Basically, the only piece of equipment you'll need is a large, upright belt sander The dealer you do business with should provide you with instructions and sandpaper Let me just say, you're fortunate to have such a durable hardwood floor in your home Now, down to work: Before you begin, make sure there aren't any protruding nails or staples that will obstruct the sander. Also, be especially sure that you sand only with the grain of the floor boards. Working in small areas at one time is also recommended because you can penetrate the grimy spots Once your chore is completed, be sure to vacuum up all the debris and damp mop the entire area Finally, you can apply several coats of a good polyurethane finish and enjoy many years of beauty. Q. My question is a basic one and only pertains to caulking. I own a home and have caulked for a few years. I’d like to know a neater way of applying it. Do you know of a smarter method of spreading caulk from a gun applicator? A. One very common way of

caulking from a gun is to first spread it and then use your index finger The way this is done, especially in comers, is to run your index finger on the caulking to from a perfect bead. Another and more perfect method is to position and use masking tape wherever possible. Using the above way will allow all the excess caulk onto the tape, only. This will also give you a neater bead when applying caulk.

Q. I say with pride that I’m a controlled alcoholic and have not had a drink for 11 years. I have been told that I will soon need a hernia operation. I’d rather not tell the doctor about my alcoholism. Would it be safe for me to have an operation with my previous history? A. I can understand your slight reticence about discussing this problem with your doctor and with your surgeon. Yet I urge you to do so. The chances are slight that after such a long period of abstinence you will be exposed to any unusual hazards during anesthesia and surgery. Before any surgery is performed on an alcoholic, a complete profile of tests is done on the liver in order to be sure it is functioning properly. You would be doing yourself a great service if you were to discuss this problem openly with your doctors. You can be certain of their respect for confidentiality. SLICE AND SERVE - Because my family likes double-cheese pizzas, 1 bake my own at home. The pizza pans I purchased had deep lines cut into them by the pizza-cut-ter wheel Cutting the pizzas was an awful project — until I remembered my trusty kitchen scissors. Now I cut through the pizzas and toppings with ease The scissors come apart for cleaning and disinfecting The pans no longer bear the marks. My pizza slices aren't pulled or pushed off the pan while cutting and I don’t bum my fingers! Kate G., Phoenix, Ariz. KEEP IT CLEAN - I use only one rack in my oven and keep the other under the sink. This way, if there is any dripping or spattering, I don’t have two racks to clean, yet the other one is at hand when needed. My oven is self-cleaning, but the racks are cleaned manually to keep them shiny, so anything that helps is a blessing and a timesaver. Jeanine W , College Park, Md JOT IT DOWN - I correspond with several relatives and friends Sometimes it is a month or so before I am able to answer their letters. As events happen that I plan to tell them about, I jot them down on the back of their unanswered letter Then, when 1 am ready to write to that person, I can easily remember the things I want to share. Julia C, Washington, D C. COUPON CLIP - Before I go to the supermarket, I get out all the coupons I know I’m going to use I take a letter-sized envelope and on the outside I list the name of the coupon and amount beside the name. Then I put the coupons in the order of the store aisles and insert them in the envelope. As 1 purchase an item, I just mark it off on the envelope. When I get to the checkout, all I do is take the coupons out of the envelope and give them to the cashier Brittany K., Louisville, Ky Share your special Home Tip with our reader*. There are sometimes valuable tricks in dummy that are out of reach because declarer cannot cross the table to cash them. Consider this deal where South can point to 13 winners — three spades, one heart, two diamonds and seven clubs However, there's one big stumbling block — the three spade winners are easier to count than to cash Let’s say South wins the diamond lead, draws trumps, and plays the A x of hearts in an effort to reach dummy. In the actual hand, this method of play fares badly. East cashes the KJ of hearts, exits with a diamond, and the slam goes down two But there is a better line of play available, and declarer should adopt it Leading the A-x of hearts wins only if West has certain special heart
