John Glenn Volleybailers Have Busy Week The Varsity and JV Volleyball teams both suffered tough setbacks throughout the past week. The varsity was downed by South Bend St. Joe 15*1 and 15-13. and North Judson 15-9 and 15-13 during • weeknight action. A sluggish start hampered the Falcons against St. Joe while a strong offensive perI formance was not enough to produce a victory against Judson. Elyse Clingenpeel had four kills । while Jennifer Thomas and Renee i Fisher added three kills each to lead the Falcons. Also contributing were Heidi Lynn with three t blocks and Tracy Legge with five setting assists. The Falcons finished 1-2 in Saturday’s Triton Tournament. Glenn opened up with a 15-7 and 15-13 victory over LaVille but was defeat- : ed by Triton 15-9 and 15-5 and Culver 15-7 and 15-11. Urey Middle School Cross Country Team Results The Urey boys and girls cross country team has increased its numbers to 22 runners this year compared to last year’s 17. In the team’s first week of competition, Urey has had two meets and one invitational. On September 6th the team traveled to LaVille. Scored as a double dual, Urey was beaten by Knox Middle School, but was victorious over LaVille and New Prairie. Scoring for Urey were Stewart Swan with a time of 13.25 in 4th place, Chris Long Bth, Danny Schweitzer 12th, Paul Palicki 18th and Frank Engle 20th place in the 3K race. On Thursday, September 8, the boys and girls competed separately against two large LaPorte Schools, Boston and Kesling. Ninety-six runners participated in the race on the John Glenn High School course. Although the Urey teams lost to both LaPorte Schools, most of the runners posted best times. In the girls’ race, MacKenzie Smith finished 12th overall with a time of 15.36. Others scoring for the girls were Heather Stasiak, Jessica Houston, Emily Houser and Charity Payne. In the boys’ race, Frank Engle finished 13th with a time of 13.29. Also scoring for Urey were Chris Long, Stewart Swan, Danny Schweitzer and Paul Palicki. The Tippecanoe Cross Country Invitational at Tippecanoe High School had its largest middle school field with 153 runners on Saturday, September 10th. Fourteen of 21 Urey harriers gave personal best performances. Stewart Swan scored first for Urey, finishing in 32nd place with a time of 12:53. Frank Engle was 41st overall, Paul Palicki 53rd, Danny Schweitzer 47th, and Duke Krocker 69th. The top finishing girl for Urey was Mackenzie Smith with a time of 14:51, placing 97th. Urey placed 9th out of 11 teams. Upcoming meets for the team include New Prairie on September 15th at New Prairie, South Central on the 20th at John Glenn, and Oregon-Davis on Thursday, the 22nd, at Oregon-Davis. Walkerton Tri Kappa Chapter Epsilon Chi Chapter of Tri Kappa held its first meeting of the 1994-95 year on Thursday, September Ist at the Walkerton United Methodist Church. The chapter welcomed back members Mary Bierly, Betty Hostrawser and Connie Knowlton. President Jill Hostetler conducted the business meeting. Nancy Hockett, Little League Stand co-chairman, thanked everyone who helped over the season to make the stand so successful. She especially acknowledged Peggy McKee who chaired the 4th of July stand during the fireworks and carnival. Tri Kappa will be sharing one third of the profits with the local Little League Committee. Cindy Keiper, Geranium Sale chair, presented a small gift to Josie Snell for selling over 1100 plants over the first five years of the project. Kim Towle reported that participation in the Kiddies Day Parade held in conjunction with the 4th of July celebration, exceeded expectations. Kim thanked the ladies who helped with the parade, and acknowledged the assistance provied by the Walkerton Police and Fire Departments. The parade committee also appreciated the participation of the Falcon Pride of John Glenn High School. Sue Louzon, Junior Miss chair, announced October 20 and 22 as the dates for this year’s program. Invitations to participate were sent to John Glenn, Oregon-Davis and LaVille High Schools. The theme for the program will be countrywestern. President Hostetler installed Mary Hoover as assistant treasurer. Kim Towle and Sandy Thomas were appointed to the By-laws Committee. Hostesses for the evening were Josie Snell, Valerie Wade and LuAnn Malstaff.
