FIELD GOAL WITH 2 SECONDS LEFT TOPS GLENN 10-0 The John Glenn Falcons followed their opening victory the week before with what coach Dan Drotar said was a terrible week of practice and "We pretty much stunk in all the areas tonight", as the Falcons fell to previously winless LaVille 10-9 on a field goal with two seconds remaining. The Falcons had the game within their grasp, having possession of the ball with time running out, only to have a couple of costly penalties, including one personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct, forced a punt with time almost out. A great 35 yard return by the Lancers Jim Larkin brought the ball to the Falcon 15 yard line and coach Kevin McCollough promptly sent in the kicking team and Chuck Wheat kicked a 32-yard field goal to turn a 9-7 lead into a heartbreaking 10-9 defeat. The loss was Glenn's second in three games, all conference games. LaVille evened their conference mark at 1-1 and are 1-2 overall for the season. Despite this, they had to settle for a field goal, with Thomas Stitz kicking a 41-yarder to make it 3-0 with just 59 seconds left in the first quarter. The Falcons got the ball back but turned it over to the Lancers early in the second period on a fumble at the John Glenn 23. A couple of short pass and run plays were good and then Mark Haskins plowed over from one yard out for LaVille, giving them a 6-3 lead. Wheat kicked the extra point, and despite the advantage in statistics for the first half, the Falcons trailed 7-3 at the main intermission. Glenn took the lead early in the second half as they sustained a drive that resulted in two passes being caught for apparent scores, the first called back because of a penalty. However, Nick Medich bounced right back with a scoring strike to Rusty Young of 21 yards and the Falcons had regained the lead. A bad snap from center resulted in no extra point kick and the Falcons held on to this lead for most of the rest of the game. In the final quarter, the Falcons faced a fourth and inches with 5:45 remaining when the decision to go for it was made and the Lancers stacked the play up without gaining those inches. LaVille took over and moved dose enough to try for a go-ahead field goal, but here also a bad snap from center let the Falcons pile all over the holder stopping the play and giving Glenn the ball back with less than two minutes left. However, three plays and the penalties lost yardage overall and Glenn punted the ball away with time running out. It was just seconds left when Larkin broke his 35 yard return to the Glenn 15 to set up the game win-
