SERVICE NOTES August 29, 1994 (FHTNC) — Navy Seaman Recruit Steven E. Zellers, a 1992 graduate of John Glenn High School, is midway through a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, homeported in San Diego, as part of a four-ship Amphibious Ready Group. In addition to their duties of transporting troops, equipment and cargo during amphibious landings, Zellers and the USS Tripoli crew visited Hong Kong, Singapore and Kenya, where they participated in several humanitarian and charitable projects.

In Singapore, 15 sailorws and Marines gave up a rare day off from work to aid the Boys Brigade in laying a foundation for a bicycle path. The Boys Brigade, the Singapore equivalent of the Boy Scouts of America, has no funding and depends on volunteer efforts to accomplish its various projects. After leaving Singapore, Zellers traveled aboard the amphibious assault ship to Mombasa, Kenya in order to support the U.S. humanitarian assistance operations to Rwanda. The humanitarian effort, called Operation Support Hope, includes the task of transferring food and supplies to that troubled region. Mobile and flexible, today's naval forces can deploy swiftly to remote areas. Whether helping build international coalitions or providing humanitarian assistance, the Navy-Marine Corps team can respond quickly to demonstrate U.S. power and resolve from the sea. He joined the Navy in November 1993.
