WALKERTON TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES August 16, 1994 Special Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in special session on August 16, 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present except Robert Schaeffer. The School Board, superintendent and approximately 10 observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. NEW BUSINESS 1. Appointments a. Beth Schmeltz, Counselor, John Glenn High School b. Cheryl Horst, English, John Glenn High School c. Cindy Isenbarger, Science, Urey Middle School dd. Diane Vermillion, Chapter 1 Teacher/Home-School Coordinator e. Cheryl Karczewski, 4th Grade, North Liberty Elementary School, Temporary Contract for Cindy Knaack, Maternity Leave for the 1994-95 School Year f. Vance Young, Assistant Football Coach, Urey Middle School g. Robin Minder, 7th gr Grade Girls Assistant Volleyball Coach A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Shirley Anderson, to approve the recommended appointments as listed. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 2. Approve Contract with Bar-ton-Coe-Vilamaa for Urey Middle School Renovation and Addition, John Glenn High School Physical Education and Athletic Improvements, and Administrative Office Ben Smith made a motion, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve the contract with Barton-COE-Vilamaa for architect and engineering services for the Urey Middle School renovation and addition, John Glenn High School physical education and athletic improvements, and administration office for a fee of 5.6% of the projected cost of the projects, but not to exceed $365,000. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 3. Approve Transfer tuition Requests a. Kimberly Kirchner, Grade 7, Urey Middle School b. James Stichter, Grade 1, North Liberty Elementary School Janice Ryan made a motion, seconded by Tom McCormick, to approve the transfer tuition request of Kimberly Kirchner, grade seven, Urey Middle School and James Stichter, grade one, North Liberty Elementary School. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 4. Approve General Education Development Diplomas a. Tia Slone b. Dennis Kurzhal c. Shanyn Coleman A motion was made by Tom McCormick, seconded by Janice Ryan, to approve General Education Development diplomas for Tia Slone, Dennis Kurzhal and Shanyn Coleman. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on August 23, 1994 at John Glenn High School. ADJOURNMENT The School Board meeting was adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
ANNOUNCES SITE FOR ANNUAL TELETHON PLEDGE CENTER
Pat & Associates will serve as the site to receive local telephone pledges and donations during the forthcoming Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon . . . Stars across America to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), which will be seen live from Elkhart and Las Vegas over WSJV-TV 28, starting at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, September 4 through Monday, September 5. Community volunteers will man the pledge center for the duration of the 21 ‘/i-hour spectacular, under the direction of Christine Lauderback. A special telephone number has been assigned to the center to receive pledges. "We’re looking forward to this event, and we know the good people of Walkerton will unite and help us in our fight against neuromuscular disease," Christine Lauderback, chairman, said. MDA is a national voluntary health agency which funds extensive patient service and research programs throughout the world for those with muscular dystrophy and related neuromuscular disorders. ATTENTION - RESIDENTS OF WALKERTON During the past week, residents of the Town of Walkerton should have received a survey that will help Walkerton plan its future. The Indiana Total Quality of Life Initiative is a statewide process sponsored by the Indiana Department of Commerce and coordinated by the Department of Urban Planning at Ball State University. This survey will give you an opportunity to make a difference in Walkerton’s future by giving your opinions on Walkerton’s strengths and weaknesses. Please take the time to fill out the survey and drop it in the mail. If you do not get a survey by August 31st, please call 586-7766 for a copy. A public meeting to discuss these surveys and set goals for our community will be held on Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Walkerton Presbyterian Church, 512 Georgia Street, Walkerton.

Local 4-Her Wins Honors At Indiana State Fair I lull * I ■HI - W Sil MiF • ill 11m jS Merita Allsop, 18, of North Liberty, received top honors at the 1994 Indiana State Fair 4-H Fashion Revue on August 13. She won first alternate in the Suit and Coat division. Her entry was a suit with green jacket and a green plaid skirt of 100% pendleton wool. Allsop, a St. Joseph County 4-H’er, has participated in 4-H for nine years and is the daughter of Wayne and Judy Allsop. Walkerton Area Jr. Miss Plans Their Annual Tea The WalkertonJr. Miss committee will hold their annual tea for prospective contestants and 'their parents in the John Glenn High School library on Wednesday, August 31 at 7:00 p.m. The Walkerton Jr. Miss is a scholarship program open to all senior girls attending John Glenn, LaVille, and Oregon-Davis High Schools. Walkerton will be hosting their 23rd annual program on October 20 and October 22 in the John Glenn High School auditorium. North Liberty Announces New Service For Town The Town of North Liberty Utilities is pleased to announce a new service to the Town. Effective immediately, the Town will be accepting tree branches and grass clippings delivered to the two compartment concrete bunk located at the Water Plant on East Maple Ave. Branches should be piled outside the bunk with the large branch end laying in one direction. The Town employees will then chip the limbs into the bunk. Wood chips will be available to anyone who wishes to use them for landscaping, free of charge. The purpose of this service is to reduce yard waste going to the landfills, as of October 1, 1994 landfills can no longer accept a yard waste. The drop off site will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for your convenience. We are pleased to provide such a beneficial service to our residents and hope that everyone will use this to its maximum. This service was made possible through the funding and cooperation of the Solid Waste Management District of St. Joseph County. John W. Gouker, Sr. Director of Streets & Utilities Athletic Tickets Now Available At John Glenn John Glenn High School has announced its all-sports pass, season ticket, and single game ticket prices for the 1994-95 athletic seasons. The all-sports pass for adults is $35.00 and $25.00 for students. Varsity football season tickets are priced at SIO.OO for adults and $6.00 for students. The all-sports passes and season tickets are available at John Glenn High School. They will also be available for purchase at the first home varsity football game against LaVille on Friday, September 9. Boys varsity basketball tickets will be priced at SIB.OO for adults and $12.00 for students. Tournament games are not included in the season ticket and all-sports pass prices. Single game ticket prices for football and boys basketball will be $3.00 for adults and students. Tickets for volleyball, J.V. football, girls basketball, wrestling and freshman basketball will be priced at $2.00 for both adults and students. Senior citizens residing in the John Glenn School Corporation are eligible for a complimentary allsports pass to all home athletic events except tournaments. To qualify, persons must be 65 years of age or older and must receive their ticket in person at the John Glenn High School athletic office. NOTICE Dr. Kerry Knape, D.D.S., will be moving to a new location in North Liberty beginning September 1. His office is moving from 110 North Main Street to 100 South Main Street, North Liberty. NOTICE There will not be a North Liberty Community Center Board meeting September 5 (Labor Day) but will meet September 12, at 7:30 p.m.
