The advertised tax rates are: General Fund, $3.50; Debt Service, $.4686; Transportation, $.73001; Capital Projects Fund, $1.25; Special Education Preschool Fund, $.01; for a total of $5,9587 based on assessed value of $54,500,000. The estimated tax rates are advertised at a rate much higher than the anticipated adopted rate set by the State Tax Board in November. 4. School Bus Inspection David McKee, superintendent, reported that the 1994 School Bus Inspection was held on July 19, 1994 and that all buses were approved, without exception, for the coming school year. Credit for the successful bus inspection goes to the efforts of the drivers and Hamilton Service Center for their special efforts in getting the buses prepared for inspection. b. Progress Report on Urey Middle School Renovation and Addition The School Board was informed that the school corporation did not qualify for a loan from the Common School Fund for the renovation and addition to Urey Middle School and for technology. Charles Lienhart & Associates and Savoie Properties have been appointed to appraise property adjacent to Urey Middle School that the Corporation has an interest in purchasing. Appraisals are to be done within 21 days. A committee consisting of community members and Board members studied the different approaches used for construction of educational facilities which include general contracting, construction management and Gerk-of-the-Works. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of each type, the committee recommends to the School Board that they proceed with a general contracting approach to construction and take a closer look at a Gerk-of-the-Works. The School Board was advised that the architect is in the process of developing a schedule for the proposed Urey Middle School project and a contract for his services, which will be reivewed by the Board and School Attorney. He is also in the process of designing different schemes fbr the Board to consider for the addition and renovation to Urey Middle School. An auction for surplus equipment has been set for Thursday, August 18, 1994 at North Liberty Elementary School at the time of 4:00 p.m. Janice Ryan shared some information with other Board members from the Indiana School Boards Assocation Summer Workshop that the Board members attended. She would like to see the School Board set goals to accomplish and suggested that the Board place priority on developing and updating School
Board policies and take a look at drug testing. At the next meeting, Board members will present their ideas for goals. The Board will then establish priorities and a plan for implementation. 2. Conferences Approved A list of conferences that have been approved for attendance were presented to the School Board along with a report from personnel attending a conference. NEXT MEETING DATE The Board of School Trustees will meet in regular session at 7:30 p.m. on August 9, 1994 at John Glenn High School. ADJOURNMENT The School Board meeting was adjourned at 8:20 p.m. Emmett Clarkes To Celebrate 60th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Garke, of Koontz Lake, will observe their 60th wedding anniversary on August 2 with a special family event. Emmett Garke, a retired printer and the former Marjorie Finch were married on August 2, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois. They had four children, Robert Garke, deceased; Marilyn Arndt, of Hobart, Indiana; Judith Garke, of Cedar Lake, Indiana; and Richard Garke, of Orlando, Florida. They also have 16 grandchildren and 24 greatgrandchildren. They have lived at Koontz Lake fbr 22 years after Emmett retired from the Florist Publishing Company where he worked fbr 42 years. Grant Steele To Celebrate 90th Birthday ■T ./J ^491 Grant Steele will be celebrating his 90th birthday on August 7 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the North Liberty Church of the Brethren. The public is invited. Grant will be 90 on August Bth. He has lived in the Walkerton area all his life. He taught school for 24 years starting in the one room rural schools where he was the janitor as well as the teacher of all eight grades. SERVICES NEWS WALKERTON On Monday Harold and Hazel Schweder were on vacation so everyone just sat around and visited before the meal. Tuesday was just another day of chit-chatting. Wednesday Jessie Schaeffer had the program with some short stories and jokes. Fan: "You certainly sang ’Lilacs in the Rain’ beautifully. You sang the words so well I could smell the lilacs". Singer: "The words? What about my singing?" Fan: "I could smell that tool" Thursday Dorothy Taylor, our hillbilly gal was back to REAL Service after being ill. She sang us a couple of songs. In the evening 26 people attended our volunteer dinner at St. Hedwig’s in South Bend. Friday we had our regular sing-a-long with Verice Walz at the piano and Millie Daniels leading the singing.
