WALKERTON TOWN COUNCIL MINUTES Joly IS, 1994 The Walkerton Town Council met at 7:00 p.m. on July 18th, 1994 with the following members present: Walt Heil, Cheryl Rizek, Gene Reese, Gordon Hartsell and Len Jaske. Attorney David Holmes and deputy clerk-treasurer Sue DeMien were also present. Minutes were approved for July 6th. Watewater — Jeff Zehner was contacted last week by a person who lives east of town. He has offered to pay us $5.00 per truck load of leaves during the fall leaf collection. Jeff will notify previous parties who were interested in taking out leaves and inform them there is someone who will pay for them and he will be first priority. Last year we had a total of 51 loads. One Ton Truck Chassis: Jeff was advised by Mahoney Chevrolet that the new one ton dump truck chassis is scheduled to be built on July 27th and delivery should be within three weeks of this date. Jeff will bring in quotes for the dump bed at the next meeting, and possibly get the truck completed by late August. June 13th Storm : A total of 19 dump truck loads of wood chips were collected from this storm. , Creech Property: A report was । submitted at the July 6th meeting i regarding the cleanup of this property. Jeff asked what steps ( should be taken to routinely mow this property. The Council stated they were pleased with the cleanup of this propety, if there are any more clean ups the property owner has to be notified first, giving him a chance first to clean it up and if he doesn’t we will then take steps for the clean up. Walt brought up that we should also be concerned , about the cleanup of the new pro- ( posed park, that will be an area that will need to be cleaned up each year as well. Truck Bed Sandblasting: The salt and sand spreader is back and completed. L & W Painting also gave us a price of $250.00 to sandblast, and primer the bed of the FBOO dump truck. Motion to sandblast and primer the bed of the FBOO dump truck by Gene Reese. Walt Heil seconded. Carried. Drainage work: Storm line replacement was completed on Washington Street last week, a new curb inlet was installed on Georgia Street today, and the drywall should be connected to it this week . This work was planned before the paving crews come into town. Sidewalks: Jeff called Mr. Bau last week, regarding the sidewalk installation but Mr. Bau has not returned his call as yet. Jeff asked the Council for a completion date. It was suggested they be done by September Ist. The specifications will be changed next year to include a time period that the work shall be completed. Electric and Water — Dave Bolze gave accumulated time sheets for his men to each Council member for the month of June. Gene Reese asked if the increase resulted from the storms. Dave replied yes. Gene also asked how to reduce the accumulated time. David stated that we are very short handed at this time and that the men realize this and are working (continued on Page 8)
The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe At Walkerton Library Friday, July 29th, the Walkerton Library will be showing C. S. Lewis’ "The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe". The movie begins at 2:00 and lasts 95 minutes. The movie is animated, but is intended for older children because of its length (though all ages are welcome!). In the story Susan, Lucy, Peter and Edmund find a different world. Narnai, behind their wardroom wall. The land is held in eternal winter by the evil witch. It is prophesized that when two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve come to the land the eveil witch will be overthrown. The White Witch is out to make sure that prophecy never can come true! The movies are free, and everyone is welcome to come — no registration necessary. For more information call the library at 586-2933. Woman’s GFWC Club Receives State Award Members of the Walkerton Woman's Community Gub were presented with an Award of Appreciation at the Planning Meeting of the Indiana Federal Gub in Indianapolis on Sunday, July 17th. Jacqueline Aeby, State President, made the presentation. The award was given for the club’s assistance in the Endowment Fund Drive. Barbara Simpson, president of the local club, accepted the award. Simpson and Nadine Keiper, club historian and publicity chairman, attended the meeting in Indianapolis over the July 16-17th weekend. Mary Pawlowski, president of the Indiana GFWC, conducted the meeting. The theme of the gathering of 90 members from all over Indiana was "Back To The Basics”. The panel of speakers included Andra Sudler, PresidentElect; Doreen Habben, Director of the Junior clubs; Elaine Crumpacker, 2nd Vice President; and Kim Steinert, Corresponding Secretary. In the afternoon the District President’s Orientation involved the exchange of ideas by separating the various committees into discussion groups. Mary Pawlowski gave a talk on "Who Are We In GFWC?" The Sunday morning speaker was Jackqueline Pierce, GFWC Leadership Chairman of an Illinois chapter. Her talk gave inspiration to the group as well as answering many of their questions. The committee chairmen of the many clubs gave their reports on the progress they made this last year. They worked with Riley’s Children’s Hospital, Goodwill Industries, Salvation Army, Red Cross, local libraries and nursing homes as well as scholarships to nursing, music and art students. There are 141 dubs in our Indiana Federation. The federated clubs will meet for the Great Lakes Conference on October 14-16th in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It will include members from Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin as well as Indiana. Members were given little enameled bows before they left the con-

John Glenn Sets Practice Starting For Fall Sports The dates and times for the first practice for fall sports at John Glenn High School have been set. Football: Friday, August Sth from 8 p.m. to midnight at the high school. Boys Cross Country: Friday, August sth from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the high school. Girls Volleyball: Friday, August sth from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the high school. Boys Tennis: Monday, August Bth, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the high school. Girls Cross Country: Monday, August Bth, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. at the high school. All athletes in grades 9-12 interested in participating must have an IHSAA physical form completed and on file with the athletic department. The physical forms are available at the high school or from the coach on the first day of practice. All athletes must also show proof of insurance by completing the John Glenn High School insurance form. The athletic department will not be providing insurance. Urey Football To Begin On August Bth & 9th Urey football practice will begin August 8, for all Bth graders. Equipment will be issued from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at North Liberty Elementary School. On August 9th, equipment will be issued for all incoming 7th graders from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at North Liberty Elementary School. Practice schedules for the remainder of the season will be handed out. Mouthpieces will be sold for SI.OO. All players are expected to have their physicals prior to these dates. If any questions arise, please contact Mr. Davis at 656-3590 or Mr. Groves at 586-7532. Paddles From The Past To Be At Potato Creek Park The Indiana Department of Natural Resources Cultural Arts Program will host a performance of Paddles From The Past on Saturday, July 30, at Potato Creek State Park. The performance, which is free of charge and open to the public, will be held at the Beach at 7:00 p.m. Be prepared for family fun and entertainment as you meet the Voyageur Brigade from Baugo Creek. It's a colorful, yet educational glimpse at the fur trade in the early 1800 s. You are invited to bring the family to this entertaining presentation. Although the performance is free, i the standard $2.00 per car ($5.00 for non-residents) will be charged at the gate. Lawn chairs or blankets are suggested to ensure comfortable seating. sere nee. Falcon Pride Leaders Ready For Challenge This year the Falcon Pride sent 1 six student leaders to the University of Illinois for the Smith Wal--1 bridge Drum Major and Auxiliary 1 Guard Camp. This is where they meet with professionals in the field of competitive marching bands. 1 Or student leaders take on the role of being the right hand of the director. They assist in marching instruction, drill execution, music teaching, maintaining discipline and establishing a chain of command. One of our student leaders is Barry Houser, who will be the * Falcon Pride drum major for his third year. One of the recognitions that Barry was bestowed was being named Most Outstanding Drum Major at the camp in a field of over 300 other drum majors from around the country. The other is that he has achieved his Drum Major First Gass! Look for Barry in the future as a university drum major. Assisting the Falcon Pride this year will be Filed Commanders junior Tracy Limerick and sopho--1 more Kate Vandenßossche. The Crimson Illusion is taking on a new name this season and will now be known as the Crimson Guard. At the helm of Guard is senior member and captain Stacy Roush. Assisting the Guard will be lieutenant Kim Kaminski and corporal Lisa Gingenpeel. The Falcon Pride is looking forward to an outstanding season with music seeicted from the Andrew Lloyd Webber production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Falcon Pride Band Camp Set For August 1-5 John Glenn Falcon Pride starts the beginning of their fall season with their annual band camp. Band Camp this year is August 1-5, starting at 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. All band students should have received necessary information regarding the band camp in the mail by this time. SENIOR APPRECIATION DAY AT WALKETON AMERICAN LEGION POST 189 Senior Appreciation Day will be observed Sunday, July 31, at 2:00 p.m. at the Walkerton American Legion Post 189. There will be a free hog roast sponsored by the S.A.L. Squadron 189. Everyone is invited to make this a memorable occasion. JOHN GLENN SCHOOL BOARD MINUTES July 19, 1994 Regular A Budget Work Session CALL TO ORDER AND ROLL CALL The Board of School Trustees of the John Glenn School Corporation met in regular session on July 19. 1994 at 7:30 p.m. in the John Glenn High School. All members were present except Shirley Anderson. The School Board, superintendent and approximately four observers began the meeting with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The School Board minutes for the regular and executive session on July 5, 1994 and the executive session on July 14, 1994 were approved by unanimous consent. APPROVAL OF CLAIMS - 1,238 through 1,305 Tom McCormick made a motion, seconded by Ben Smith, to approve claims numbered 1,238 through 1,305. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 1 OLD BUSINESS 1. Approve Urey Middle School Student Handbook and Athletic Handbook for Middle and Elemen- ' tary Schools Robert Schaeffer made a motion, seconded by Tom McCormick, to approve revisions in Urey Middle School Student Handbook and Athletic Handbook for Middle and Elementary Schools. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. NEW BUSINESS 1. Approve the Maternity Leave ' Request for Cindy Knaack for the ; 1994-95 School Year A motion was made by Janice Ryan, seconded by Tom McCormick, to approve the maternity leave request for Cindy Knaack for the 1994-95 school year. 2. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. 3. Approve the Advertisement of General Debt Service Fund, Transportation Fund, Capital Projects Fund and Preschool Special Fund 1995 Budgets. Janice Ryan made a motion, seconded by Robert Schaeffer, to approve the advertisement of the Genera] Fund, Debt Service Fund, Transportation Fund, Capital Projects Fund and Preschool Special Education Fund budgets for 1995. The motion was approved by a six to zero vote. The budgets will be advertised in local papers and the public will be given the opportunity for input on the budgets at the August 9, 1994 School Board meeting.
