Voice Os The People "Giris Softball” Last Saturday a group of people collected close to 100 signatures on a petition to support the creation of a Girl’s Ball Team at John Glenn High School. The collection took place at the V.F.W.while the girls played their final game, and, for some girls it was their final game. They are or will be too old to play in the only league in our area next year. Girls’ softball is now a conference sport in High School and several schools, some smaller than Glenn, have teams that are looking for good opponents to compete against. We have the talent in our area to organize a terrific team of athletes. So, why don’t we have a girls’ team at John Glenn? I’ve been told by other parents who have tried in the past to get a team at the high school that it interferes with the girls track team, according to Mr. Clark. My daughter was on the track team last season because she wanted to participate in sports and the only option she had was track. She wanted to play softball . I don’t believe that John Glenn would drop their baseball program because it Judy’s Beauty Salon 207 W. interferes with boy’s track, so there has to be a better reason, and all those who signed the first petition are eager to hear a better reason. Wanting a girls' ball team at the high school is not a radical notion. It is issue of fairness. Parents of athletes, regardless of the gender, want their kids to at least have the opportunity to play the sport they love. That is what the parents and grandparents, friends and just people who love the game said when they signed the petition. Support the drive to get a girls’ team at John Glenn. Call the school, call school board members, start a petition, or sign one if it is presented. All athletes deserve a change to play. Jamie Vandenßossche “A Good Eating Place” I have heard it many times, and I have even said it myself. This town, Walkerton, needs a good restaurant that is open from dawn to dark, that service consistently good food, and has good service. On Monday evening, after the trip to the salebarn, we stopped at a local restaurant. The unlucky waitress had a crowded house. She tried very hard to serve all of her customers. Several people left without being served. There were two other servers in another part of the restaurant who chose not to help our gal. A couple of us at our table served coffee to everyone. We ordered, we waited patiently, our food came. I had ordered country fried steak, with a baked potato, salad and vegetable, coral It looked like it had been served several times before. When I took it back, I was told that I couldn’t change my corn for something else. Two starches at a meal are not the best. Our waitress brought me another side. Roy didn’t even get his vegetable. The steak and
potato were good. The server tried to do a good job and she did. When I buy a meal, I like to be served and fussed over. The W.I.N. books go on sale this week. It has been a long and hard job for chairman Dixie Anspaugh, but she has done an outstanding job, for free. Many people serve this town without compensation for mileage or time. These people should be our heroes. Dixie should be nominated for outstanding citizen by someone. Just call the Ciamber of Commerce president Gene Reese and nominate her. Also be sure and buy the books. Our fowl farm has added 17 baby chicks. Momma Mel, the goose, is still sitting on her one egg. I don’t think she met up with a good papa. Gobiette will be hatching soon and Ichabod will have more babies to raise. The fresh produce is coming to the Walkerton Livestock Sale on Monday nights. There are beans, peppers, tomatoes, raspberries, too bad I bought them all. Wanda is making me pies. A friend brought us some from beets with greens. Fresh produce is one of the nicer things of summer. Don’t forget the LaPorte County fair this week . We have been attending different festivals this summer, trying to get more variety at our Great Pumpkin Festival this fall. Sincerely, Nedra Williams R.E.A.L. SERVICES NUTRITION PROGRAM N. L.
