Voice Os The People “Thank Yon Police Dept.” I would like to address this letter to the Walkerton Police Department. On July 4th my husband and four children came to your lovely town to attend your carnival and fireworks display. We live in LaPorte and had never been there before. My 4 year old little boy had fallen asleep on the way there. Since he was tired, my husband put him on his shoulders to carry him. When we reached the ticket line, my husband lifted him down. He thought I saw him, but I thought he still had him. There was a man going down the line explaining about the cost of the tickets so the line would move faster. After he left us my husband noticed our little boy was gone. We both thought the other was watching him. We immediately started to search for him. It seemed like hours but it was only five minutes. We had no luck in finding him. My worst fear he had been abducted. Anyone attending knew there were thousands of people there. I noticed two policemen so I went to them and told them my little boy was missing. They tried to calm me, asked for his description, and what he was wearing and his name, and also for a picture. Within five minutes three officers came from around the school with Andy in one of their arms. The officers were very kind to him and told him they were taking him to his mommy. I wish I had the name of all those officers directly involved. I was so upset at the time all I could do was cry and thank them. I never

thought with all those people they would be able to find one little boy they had never seen. I want to thank the Walkerton Police Department and I hope all those officers involved see this so you know how wonderful you are. Walkerton is very lucky to have a Police Department like yours. God bless you and your families. Patti Lisak 208 “E” St. LaPorte, Indiana “More Thanks” When I wrote the thank you letter last week :in the wee small hours of the Sth), I was afraid I would forget to mention someone — and of course I did! Don Ludwig has severd as our announcer for several years, so I guess I just think of him as one of the group. Don spent the entire 4th helping us in many ways to get things set up and then did a great job on the mike that night. Thanks Don. Tom Walter and the Knights of Columbus have handled the ticket booths at the carnival for several years also. Tom also attended some of our meetings as the K of C representtive. Again, Tom, I guess we just think of you as one of us. Thanks so much for all the guys who worked the booths during the other days of the carnival. The other group I left out last week is a new group to us, yet an old part of the celebration on the 4th. The worship service has been with us for years, but this year the newly reorganized Ministerial Association handled the entire arrangements for us. Thanks to all the ministers and especially to Father Winkowski, who was in charge of organizing the service. There were more people in attendance than I have seen for several years. Great service and all the offering went to charity. Thanks

Ministerial Association. I wish the 60 some people who donated at the Worship Service had been an influence on the thousands who attended the fireworks. I saw the money donated to the pantry (I don’t know the amount 8 but I saw the containers that were full) and it was more than the Friends of the Fourth received in the donation buckets at the school grounds. Several people told me this week that they were in a hurry to get home or some didn’t want to fight the crowd to get to the donation buckets. If this was your problem also, please feel free to send us your donation (Mary Ann Frame, 1103 Georgia St., Walkerton, check made out to Friends of the Fourth), or give it to any of the four members of our group. This is the first year since I have been on this committee that we do not have enough money to meet our obligations. Part of this is due to the larger amount spent for fireworks this year, as we were able to present a much better display in the new location. Normally, this would not have been a problem, but as I mentioned above, the donations received on the 4th were much below what we have received in the past. At this point we are over SI,OOO in debt for this year, and the committee would greatly appreciate any donations from individuals or organizations. To those of you who missed the best fireworks ever or any of the other activities on the 4th because you listened to the many rumors going around, we are truly sorry. Several people called me to get "it straight from the source’’ and I assured them blankets and chairs

were allowed on the school grounds and that we were not charging admission. For those who still went to Place Park, we also arc sorry. We had the change announced on TV and radio and in the newspapers. There were also signs around town, so we don’t know how these people could have missed all of these ways we tried to spread the word. We are aware of some problems that the change to a new location created. A meeting of all groups concerned is to be held Tuesday, July 12th, and we will be starting to prepare for next year at that time. Please feel free to contact any member of our committee with suggestions. We welcome all the help we can get to give Walkerton the continued reputation of having the “best fireworks in Michiana’’.
