Stevens, who passed away three years ago, July 9,1991. We do not need a special day to bring you to our minds. The day we do not think of you is very hard to find. They say time heals all sorrow and helps us to forget, but time so far has only proved how much we miss you yet. God gave us strength to bear it and courage to take the blow. But what it meant to lose you, no one will ever know. Wife, Daughters & Son PHYLLIS W. DAVIS ELECTED TO CHURCH POST Phyllis W. Davis, of North Liberty, has been elected to serve on the Church of the Brethren General Board. Elections were held at the denomination’s Annual Conference, meeting June 28 - July 3 in Wichita, Kansas. The 25-member General Board administers mission and service programs across the U.S. and abroad. Headquartered in Elgin, Illinois, the General Board has offices in New Windsor, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Geneva, Switzerland; and several other locations. The Brethren carry out mission and service work through programs such as Brethren Volunteer Service, agricultural exchange programs in Poland and China, the SERRV self-help handcraft program, and disaster and refugee work. The Brethren movement began in Central Germany in 1708. Along with the Mennonites and the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), the 148,000 member Church of the Brethren is a historic peace church, conscientiously opposed to all war. PARKING PROFITS GO TOWARD CHARITIES The 4th of July in Walkerton was not only filled with fireworks and carnival rides. Many took time to raise money to help those in need. According to one of the members of the United Methodist Youth Group, part of their profits from parking cars will go to a missionary. The Presbyterian Summer Kids Club also parked cars, all the proceeds to be given to the Community Food Pantry. The Walkerton Ministerial Assoc, took a free will offering of the sixty plus 4th of July Ecumenical Service attenders. The entire offering also to benefit the Pantry. Most area churches sponsor the Food Pantry which distributes food monthly to those in need. The two churches and the Ministerial Association both express their gratitude to those who gave of their time or financial contributions. In a world where people can tend to be focused upon themselves, it’s nice to see a Community who cares.
WALKERTON MINISTERIAL ASSOCIATION MEETS The Walkerton Ministerial Association recently met at Al’s Diner. Plans for the Fourth of July Ecumenical service were finalized. It was decided to move the 10:00 .a.m. service from outside at John Glenn High School across the street to the United Methodist Church. This should make it more comfortable for those attending providing a place to sit and be out of the hot sun or rain. Refreshments will be served following the service. The public is warmly invited. The next multi-church community service is a Thanksgiving Service, November 20th, at the Wescyan Church. The pastors present expressed their well wishes for Pastor Russell Payne of the Blissville Church of the Brethren, who has accepted another call that will take him out of state. The ministers will miss his godly presence and wise contributions. The next Walkerton Ministerial Association is scheduled for July 27, at 12:15 at Dockside Restaurant. Area Christian pastors are invited to come. For more details, please contact Dr. Lacy at 5863534. JULY 4th COMMUNITY ECUMENICAL WORSHIP SERVICE WELL ATTENDED The second Community Ecumenical Worship Service was held on the morning of the 4th. Some 62 people from many different churches came together to worship The Lord and fellowship with one another. The United Methodist Church hosted this service, with Pastor Doug Dißell challenging and encouraging us all make a difference in our community by serving Christ. Father Michael Winkowski, of St. Patrick Parish, did a great job in putting together this service. A free will offering was taken for the Community Food Pantry. Like the Good Friday Community Service, this one was sponsored by the Walkerton Ministerial Association. The third service is sched-
