Voice Os The People “Thank You’’ The Friends of the Fourth would like to express our thanks to the many wonderful people in the area who did so much to help us have another great celebration. There were so many who were willing to donate time and money to finance the activities, insurance and utilities needed, so we could give our full financial attention to purchasing the best possible fireworks. Thanks to Dave McKee and the John Glenn School Board for allowing us use of the school property. Also thanks to Brad Schmeltz and the custodians at John Glenn High School. The Town employees were fantastic to work with this year. Special thanks go to Dave Bol^e, John McGovern and their crews. Chief Carl Sobieralski and the entire Police Department did an outstanding job, and did it willingly. The entire Fire Dept, deserve our thanks for setting up and shooting off the fireworks. These guys work hard every year and like the Friends of the Fourth committee members, seldom get to see the beautiful results of their efforts. Without the support and hard work of the Park Department (our bosses), this thrilling event would be impossible. They not only supply tiie manpower for our committee, but without Greg Williams and Len Northam creating the outstanding ground displays — our fireworks would just be like all the others. Thanks guys. This year we gained a new support group for which we are very thankful. The Chamber of Commerce made it possible for us to bring in WKVI for a live broadcast on the 4th, with local community member Bill Beaver doing a great job. Thanks to all the merhancts who helped finance this project and special thanks to Gene Reese, Connie Medich and Dave Behr. Connie also became an active member of our committee and brought much benefit to us, plus getting her husband Nick to give us many hours of protection as a Posse

member. The St. Joseph County Posse is another group that donates their services each year, and we appreciate this greatly. Teachers Credit Union and Charles O. Hiler and Son were responsible for donating the trips offered by our committee. We thank them and hope the lucky winners enjoy their family vacations by TCU Travel. Tri Kappa deserves special thanks for one of the best Kiddie Parade ever. Josie Snell and Kim Towle not only did the work behind this parade, but also served as representatives for their organization on our committee all year. Other representatives that attended during the year were Alice Walker, from the Woman’s Community Club; Gene Reese, from the Chamber of Commerce; and Morris Searfoss and Walter Hiler from the Odd Fellows. Personally, I want to thank the people who gave up part of the holiday with their families to work in the ticket booths at the carnival. Thanks to Iva Clark, Christine Lauderback, Barb and Dave Burket, Harry Tuttle, Anna Sheets and Chuck Joyce. Also special thanks to Mickey Tuttle and the Mike Albert Benefit Committee for helping me get people to work. The Flag Ceremony by the American Legion was especially impressive this year with the flag burning ceremony. I hope this becomes a yearly event. Thanks to all involved. Also, we hope everyone enjoyed the entertainment provided by Mike Westhues and the Amarillo Star dancers. Thanks to them for working so hard on a warm muggy day. Another personal thanks to Bill Beaver. When I called Bill about the remote broadcast, he had this splended idea about playing patriotic music after the broadcast anddd during the fireworks. Bill, I didn’t get to see the fireworks, but I could hear that music, even over the carnival music and it was thrilling! Thanks for a great idea! I save Mike and Mary Ann Buffington and the entire carnival crew for last. They really deserve a great big thanks. Being a new

location and with new owners of the carnival, we had many new and interesting situations. They were great in every way. Mike and George, the carnival manager, would talk it over with our committee — and we worked out all the details to everyone’s satisfaction. It was great to work with local people, especially when they were so cooperative and pleasant. Again a special personal thanks to Mike Buffington. The community should know that Mike opened the carnival for one hour on Friday morning at no cost, to allow all the children from Our Little Angels Day Care to enjoy the rides. That was great, Mike, and the joy on the faces of those children was something money cannot buy. Thanks to all the community that came out to enjoy the holiday. We felt it was great and hope you all had a wonderful, thrilling fantastic 4th of July! Jean Cole Member of the Friends of the Fourth “July Fourth’’ Another July Fourth come and gone. We started off by going to South Bend and having breakfast with Greg and his lively family. I should say lively kids. Our daugh-ter-in-law, Debbie, whom we have adopted as our daughter, was her usual sweet self. We had a chance to visit with Nancy and Angie, Greg’s in-laws, who had driven up from Fort Wayne. After a nice breakfast at the Holiday Inn, where Greg is head of maintainence, we came home to rest and prepare for the rest of the day. Roy took a nap and I prepared. We were going to leave for the parade at North Liberty earlier than we did. But we made it in time to sit with Mean Mike Daube, who makes nasty comments about our Fowl Farm, Denise, Kenny and Nancy Chapman. A nice group, even if I was mad at being late. It was a great parade with baton twiriers, fire trucks and of course our own John Glenn band. It was a great show. Roy grilled the meat and I tossed the salad for supper. Brother George joined us for supper, he had gone to Place Park and he thought that there was nothing doing for the Fourth. We then proceeded to the fireworks area. Thanks Lawrence and Darlene Pontiius for letting us park at your place. I’m getting old and lazy and I don’t like to walk. We encamped on the northwest lawn. The carnival blocked our view of the ground display. The aerials were excellent. It was hard to hear the oohs and aahs from the crowd. The weather cooperated with a nice breeze. The trip home was another story. After waiting for about 30 minutes, we got into the line of traffic on Georgia. Nick Medich, you and your crew were trying hard to keep us going. The local police also were working very hard to keep an even flow onto U.S. 6. We were directed to go east on 6, when we wanted to go west. We then drove to Spruce and headed south to Watson and then back to go through the country to home. It was certainly an interesting day. I know that everyting is right with the world, this morning we had our normal thunderstrom on July sth. Don’t forget, the Walkerton Alumni Banquet on July 9th. I understand that there will be a large group there. Mildred Me-
