Voice Os The People “Dear Walkerton” This is a year of change. The Friends of the Fourth have been agonizing over the location for the celebration this year. Traditionally, the event has always been held at Place Park. It was started there, and has been there ever since. We felt, as we are sure everyone else does, that we wanted to stay at the park. However, we have been told that we cannot get liability insurance for Place Park anyone, due to the size of the area. And, the company that sells us the fireworks would not sell us the large rockets because of the chance of injury to a spectator. We did not want to sacrifice the quality of the event, and we did not want to end the traditional fireworks, so we had to come up with an alternative. So, one big change this year is the location for the July 4th celebration. Dave McKee and the School and Town Boards have been generous enough to offer the John Glenn High School grounds for our big day. We are very, very lucky to have such a location. We are grateful to Dave and the Boards for their offer. There is so much more room than before, we will have a great chance to grow. We have been asked to rope off the football field and the baseball diamond, so your cooperation in preserving these areas will be greatly appreciated. Mary Kay has a skin care program designed for your skin type. All basic skin care products are noncomedogenic and clinically tested for skin irritancy and allergy. Another change — the carnival has been purchased by a local family, and we are asking for bigger and better rides. We have great entertainment lined up, and WKVI will be broadcasting from the grounds on the 4th. The fireworks boys are working on really great displays. The Walkerton Ministerial Association will be conducting a church service on the 4th. We hope you will give us a chance to prove that change is good. Spend the 4th with us, and enjoy the big, new location. Come early to stake your spot out with your lawn chairs and blankets. We look forward to a huge crowd! Mary Ann Frame A Friend of the Fourth “Good Job” The Town of Walkerton electric department workers did another great job in getting the power back on quickly, after a big storm. Thanks guys for the dedication to your job. We were lucky, we only lost a part of a tree. At our rental property, a tree came down. We did lose 3 baby chicks from suffication. We save two others by bringing them into the house. They have been reunited with mama, and all are doing fine. Our neighbors to the north lost their garage and chicken house. Robert and Marilyn Owens, our neighbors, said that they will be without power for at least three days because they have to do extensive rewiring. They also lost their large propane tank and can’t cook either. They are all fine, but Marilyn said that it was very scary. We were mightly lucky. We needed the rain, but not necessarily at such a price. The W.I.N. coupon books are going great guns. There will be many saving and fun things included. The merchants are being very generous. So remember to buy one when they hit the market. Entries have been received for the Great Pumpkin Festival, and we’re rolling right along. Alumni of Walkerton High School, don’t forget to get your reservations into Mildred McKes-
son for July 9th. I have been hearing many grumbles about the use of the handicapped parking areas. So let’s let those who need them use them, and the rest of us don’t abuse. Well it is time to get on the W.I.N. coupons. Dixie is a hard tax Mistress and expects us to get our jobs done. Sincerely, Nedra Williams “4th Os July 1944 — Humbug” Remembering Walketon’s first 4th of July display. The fireworks were set off from the bandstand that was in the park. One of the fireworks ignited another causing a chain reaction and the fireworks display that was planned to last a while was over quickly. However, ever since the 4th of July celebration has been in Place Park. Picnics under the shade trees, children playing on the playground equipment and where you met and visited with old friends you hadn’t seen in sometime and where friends and families joined each other in the evening to watch the fireworks together. We realize changes come but feel the tradition of the 4th of July celebration at Place Park need not be broken. Dave and June Lind “Letter To Town Board Members” Regarding the recent storm and power failure throughout our town on June 13, 1993, we want to express our persona] "thanks” to the line crews and especially Dave Bolze who certainly proved he has the knowledge and experience (18 years) to be "superintendent of our Municipal Utilities". Think again, Town Board members before we let Dave go. We need him and his experience. Brisk and Judy Neidlinger “Thank You” Thank you for the clean-up efforts to the Walkerton Police Department, Walkerton Fire Department, Walkerton Ambulance Department, Town Utility Employees, Dave Bolze, Jollie Back and all others who helped in any way.
